Si B Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 I am reading more and more of how people are using their PCs to play their music rather than their CD/Turntable player. What is the best format to have the music file? WMA MP3 etc.
Guest Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Anything that's not lossy, as that throws away information. AIFF, WAV or Apple Lossless (if you're using iTunes) are all good.
Shane Hanify Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Gidday Si, I find that FLAC is fine. Generally avoid mp3 etc for archives / serious listening. It's fine for bg stuff though. Cheers, Shane.

The file format will also be dependent on what media player you use to play the files on. As Michael says, Apple Lossless if using Itunes, or an iplod. I hate itunes so use FLAC, with Foobar.
TheBlueMushroom1553552749 Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 Totally agree with Newbie: FLAC's my lossless medium of choice (run from a media server in another room and a purpose-built fanless HTPC booting from a compact-flash card), run through Foobar (small and simple to install, easy to create playlists and with some work, quite configurable [thanks again, James ] ) FWIW, note that the encoder can make a difference as well: many here swear by EAC. I find it a little slow, myself (except on really bad discs, where its invaluable in recovering data) so use Bonkenc in"paranoia" mode. I'd recommend trying different encoders and seeing how they sound to you. HTH! Cheers -Darl
C33 Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I have read that it is wise to have an uncompressed backup such as WAV as well as something like FLAC that supports tags.
Ernie1553552694 Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 It depends if you want to invest in more hard drive storage.
tkr001 Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 There really isn't any need to do that. You can recreate wav bit perfect from flac so just back up in that format and save space.
