curiousgeorgenz Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 Are these speaker stands any good, http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photography/Home-audio/Speakers-and-stands/Stands/auction-300411502.htm...? Or these, http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photography/Home-audio/Speakers-and-stands/Stands/auction-300553025.htm They're for a pair of Totem bookshelf speakers. Alternatively, any recommendations?
Shane Hanify Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 Gidday c_g, those (cheap) tubular steel / thin top and bottom plates designs ring like a bell if not damped. I've found the best stands for small standmounts to be an open design such as the ones for the Epos14 or big heavy ones like the sound creations 4 column / manhattan or Partington's super dreadnoughts. I dare say my MA's would prefer the latter but I haven't got around to ordering the steel in yet to make some. In all cases, if you knock a stand and it rings then that will show through in your music (at mid to high volumes). Even at low volumes a cheap stand will smear the music. When mine were on stands not dissimilar to the ones in your first link, weighting the base down with a sideways paving slab between the columns seemed to help a great deal. Those second ones look fairly solid although the copy sounds slightly suspect and I can't recall a decent stand made of aluminium which these appear to be. Stands, like speakers are subjective and all speakers will sound slightly different on different stands. See if you can't take a set or three home for a weekend (or better still a week) and see what works best for you. Cheers, Shane.
curiousgeorgenz Posted July 4, 2010 Author Posted July 4, 2010 These could be the ones, http://solidsteel.it/scheda.php?lingua=eng&codserie=7&codpro=19#
Shane Hanify Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 They look like an expensive barstool Nice and solid though. What's your budget? Cheers, Shane.

Definitely less than $1000. As little as possible would be nice, however not sure I would be happy with beer budget outcome. Sound Creations 4 columns were well over $1000 (RRP) when I checked with them. Yikes. Solidsteel were available in NZ years ago (IIRC). For some unknown reason I do prefer their aesthetics to the looks of black columns. Am hoping they function well if I pulled the trigger. Available online. As for barstools, this is my favourite http://www.ecc.co.nz/Product.aspx?p=1128&c=486

I'm toying with a 3 column design for the MA's at the moment. All I have to do is get some 1/4" plate and then figure out how to cut it ... I could slum it and go for an 1/8th instead I guess. It's only at the initial design stage but it will be two things. The right height, and heavy. Cool barstool. Cheers, Shane. Attached files
crispynz1 Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 I have a set of 550mm Sound Creation 4 column stands. The price has recently gone up to around $1200. They are very heavy 35kg's loaded with iron sand. The dealer I purchased mine off has another set and might let them go for around $900. PM me if you want me to ask them.
chiba Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 I found six foot lengths of 2" square steel tubing are $37 on Trademe, and doubt 3" would be hugely more expensive. Welding must be bl--dy expensive in NZ.
Shane Hanify Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 The square / rectangular sections aren't hugely expensive but there's a fair bit of labour involved and that plate is not cheap. Cheers, Shane.
bluedog Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Shane if you want to cut 1/4 '' plate all you need as an angle grinder and 1mm thick disk, like hot knife through butter then all you need is one of those 19000 odd watt amps for a welder
Shane Hanify Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 And I would imagine a steady hand if you want straight lines I don't think the baby welder at work would hack that level of work either. Anyway c_g, I'll keep an ear to the ground and post any suitable solutions. Cheers, Shane.
curiousgeorgenz Posted July 4, 2010 Author Posted July 4, 2010 Partington Dreadnought Broadside look the business. Hate to think the cost of shipping those bad boys to NZ.
kaka Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Before I went Living Voice I was wondering about Harbeths - one of the stands for the big Harbeths are the Canadian Skylans. This page could be worth a look The prices are canadian $
Halo88 Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Hi Kaka, I use the Skylan 20" four column stands under my Harbeth 7es-2, very good results when mass loaded with kitty litter  What Living Voice model do you use? I recently picked up an Air Tight ATM-1 amp & need some high efficiency speakers. Living Voice really impressed me at the Canterbury Audio show, & I know they partner well with Kondo amps. Regards.
kaka Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 The middle ones - IBX R2 The challenge seems to be to get them perfectly level so they don't slowly move about on their plinth (there is blu-tack in between).

Morning All, I use the Partington Super Dreadnoughts under my Harbeths --highly recommended as alternatives to the much touted but sadly lamented Tallis Slates. I shipped the PSD's via Bax Global from the UK -unfilled of course for approx $130NZD's. Filling is 50% ea #10 lead shot/Silica sand. The Skylans also come well received as well. Des
Halo88 Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Hi Kaka, So then....the black lower portion of the speaker is a separate plinth, with the speaker cabinet above located by blue tac? Regards. Attached files
kaka Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 That's right There isn't much movement involved, the bond is pretty solid. But after a week you notice that the two are not quite aligned - its akin to continental drift. I need to do some more spike adjusting.

Des Partington Dreadnought Broadside shipped to NZ, GBP370 or NZD810. Not bad considering current NZD vs GBP exchange rate. If pinged with GST then it's $900+... About $150 more than I wanted to spend... Decision. Decision.
Guest Guest Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Morning CG, Yes not a bad price considering the distance/etc but the $ to the Quid is beneficial at the present time. There are some competent Mfg's of Quality Stands Locally now, Sounds Creations-still operating?-and a dude in Hawkes Bay I think. Its just a Pity with our West Coast Slate in abundance no one has sought to produce that version-- Slate can be wonderous in some applications. Des
bluedog Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Surly if you take a picture to a local engineer of what you want he could knock a set up for less then that, a meter of 75x75x8 is only $45 plus gst and that is very heavy ! make great stands IMHO should only take a couple of hours to make at the out side ? if you are handy with a spray can will look a million dollars worth looking at ?
curiousgeorgenz Posted July 7, 2010 Author Posted July 7, 2010 As crispynz1 has confirmed Sound Creations 4-column are $1200 RRP or can be had for around $900. Partington Dreadnought (either Super or Broadside) is internationally recognised as high performance stand for bookshelf speakers. One of the best. Not sure about WAF but does any speaker stand really have WAF. Waiting for some more information to come back from Partington and I'll decide. $900 = 30 coffees. Simple maths.
KevinO Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 I'm quite curious to know whereabouts in Auckland you have to pay $30 for a coffee?
curiousgeorgenz Posted July 7, 2010 Author Posted July 7, 2010 KevinO;126946 wrote: I'm quite curious to know whereabouts in Auckland you have to pay $30 for a coffee? Ha ha. Kids woke me early. Probably too early in the morning to be doing maths. Trying to justify things in my own head... whoops. Hope that's not an indication of what work will be like today. Could be in serious trouble.
