looking at a simple (2 channel at the moment)system for mum...

she listens to classical and classic rock.

inputs would be a: MyskyHDI unit

:Htpc hith HDMI video and spdif audio

Good old fashioned turntable with component outs.

Oh and a 42" lcd panasonic tv (HD i think)

looking at mission M34i/M64i/M71/m62 speakers all around the same price

also considering the wharfdales 10.1 at $799

and the diamond pacific evo 2 8 at $899

AVR:

Was offered a Denon avr 789 for $1200 new

theres also a tx-sr606 onkyo second hand for about $800...

any suggestions on whats the best setup??

so far the onkyo 606 and some mission M62i would only set me back about $1500, then maybe add a small sub.

any suggestions?

i would definitely go with the onkyo. it has more features and functionalities compare to the denon. it is more capable machine.

there are plenty of subs on trademe, just have a look around.

the wharfie pacific evo 2 is definitely a better speaker than diamond 10.1. for $100 more, i'd go with the pacific evo. you'd get more resolution and dynamic.

Gidday Floydie.

Er? You mean RCA's right? and just the two of them?

If it's a standard TT then she'll need a phono amp. TT's don't output at line level and need an earth.

And if you're looking at a simple 2 ch setup then why the AVR?

Cheers, Shane.

i want to be able to input everything into the reciever so mum can work it all out easily and use a logitec remote so she can just hit "watch TV" or "listen to PC" or listen to record"(via RCA's)and it will all switch itself around. with possible Mysky HDI and the HTPC system i just want it all to work.(yes i know mysky wont work on the Logitec.)

so far a used 606 and some evo's looks like a good budget setup.

if i had more disposable income i would flick her my rotel amp/preamp and she could just buy some speakers...... DAMN RECESSION!

Gidday Floydie,

that's fair enough. If you haven't had a logitech remote before prepare for some teeth gritting when it comes to programming it.

You will still need a phono stage for the record player / TT as AVR's are line level only.

Good luck with the hunt.

Cheers, Shane.

We control fourteen different devices in three different rooms with ten different activities ( including MySky HDi ) and had no problems setting up our first and only Logitech 785 at all.

Programmed it once with all devices we have that are listed on their website and have only gone back to install the latest firmware periodically and that's it.

Found it very user friendly to setup personally.

I used to come across this scenario often working in retail.

Trust me on this one .... get her a simple 2 channel amp & a pair of speakers.

Movies that she'll watch will hardly justify a 5.1 set up and the overall simplicity of a 2 channel will save potential headaches.

IME 5.1 set ups just become white elephants. Stick with 2 channel, it'll sound much better for music anyway & I'll bet thats what it gets the most use for too.
