I'd be interested in the SQ of this LP myself, as I have most of JJ's LPs... & I ususally tend to eschew compilations.

I wonder if anyone has JJ's (very good) 'Mike's Murder' album?... but that's a new thread I suppose ;)

Joe Jackson Live 80/86 LP (Australian pressing), has variable SQ. Recorded from his world tour, Netherlands sounds the best, with Canada and Australia tracks not so good, IIRC. Overall, I found the cuts quite "live" in a hot/trebly way, almost digital in sound.

Mike's Murder (1983 NZ pressing for A&M) haven't listened to this for years, so just playing now. Impressed with the SQ, not what I expected at all. But more importantly, the tracks are great!

My favourite JJ LP would have to be Body and Soul.

If anyone has an early US pressing of Night and Day in pristine condition, let me know...

Remember having the unusual 3 sided big world which had great SQ.Another bargin bin rescue.

Yep, my side 4 has been played ONCE, just to confirm that nothing was on it, as it has track grooves and they vary in density, so I thought that maybe maybe there is something on there...but NO.

My 1986 Festival NZ pressing is OK. Lacks weight and 3-D dimesionality. In other words, thin and weedy...

I have a UK pressing of this release and there is a logical reason for the "live" sound. As Joe says on the sleeve notes "it would be a real live record; nothing would be re-recorded, overdubbed, or 'fixed'".

The different venues, periods, gear, styles etc would account for the differing sound quality of the four sides. Personally I have no problem with the SQ on this and would rate it one of my favourite live albums of all time simply because it does such a good job of capturing the energy and essence of a Joe Jackson show while simultaneously conveying the differences between the four tours/bands/musical styles - the SQ may even have something to do with this.

His show at the St James (2003 I think) was an absolute highlight for me - the last thing I thought about while watching was 'soundstaging, imaging, clarity, neutrality. etc.

I also have the "Live in New York" album and its a completely different beast again but still very good. If I had to choose between one or the other though nine times out of ten I would opt for "live 1980/86".

The 'Big World' album takes a slightly different approach to the live recording concept and is fantastic in so many ways including SQ. 'Body & Soul' is also particularly good.

If anyone has a decent copy of "Blaze of Glory" they are willing to part with then please let me know as I only ever got the 'radio advance' of the album which doesn't have the segues between tracks.... and a good copy of 'Big World' come to think of it... mine appears to be missing...

I was only commenting on SQ, not musical quality.

The live shows add another dimension, with different tempos/piano/drum lines etc. Different but not necessarily better, but definitely worthwhile (but not SQ wise).

I have Blaze but can't seem to find it...

Yep, September? 2003. Brilliant. Couldn't agree more. It was a buzz!

Understoood, just giving my observation that, for me at least, the SQ isn't an issue and should also be viewed within the context of JJ's comments on the matter.

Maybe my UK pressing is better than the Oz one?

Of course the musical quality isn't an issue at all:)

It's good to see there are some other JJ fans out there. Have you read "a cure for gravity"?

I never managed to get into the all-instrumental 'Will Power' album.

I must give it another try, after all these yrs.

Not only does my Oz pressing have a lot of noise but the music is pretty pedestrian.

Give it a miss Owen.

WIll Power sounds as alive as a nun's sex life...

Night and Day: DG pressing West Germany.. good sound but a huge warp in it as received.. fortunately playable.

Laughter and Lust: Virgin, UK pressing

Stepping Out: Polydor Aussy pressing

Body and Soul:my original NZ? one disappeared, but was getting pretty knackered through many pleasurable hours listening.... one of my all time fav albums..recently scored an A&M SP5000 pressing, if that means anything.. from RG.. yet to try...

on cassette to digress slightly :D

Look Sharp, and I'm the Man... but my real gem is in this format is Big World.. on BASF chrome.. awesome via Nakamichi.. second only to Body and Soul in terms of JJ favs'.

OK, I was a little harsh with that opinion, as I've just given it a spin. Still thin and digital sounding, but the soundstage/3D dimensionality is actually quite good!

Still can't find my Blaze Of Glory LP. :-(

I have three Joe Jackson albums:

Body and Soul

Beat Crazy

Jumpin Jive

All NZ purchases.

Ranked by preference:

Beat Crazy

Jumpin Jive

Body and Soul

Ranked by SQ

Body and Soul

Jumpin Jive

Beat Crazy

...but SQ on all three albums is pretty good. Beat Crazy tho' is the one that gets me moving.
