I didn't have quite enough speaker cable to make a whole run so for each speaker I have about 2.5m of Kimber (grey/black) joined to a 2.5 length of Kimber (brown/black). Each strand of the cable is twisted together and wrapped in electrical tape (shoddy I know).

Is it bad sonically to join them like this? and is it even worse that they are two different grades of cable? Cheers.

As a temporary measure if you must then fine.

But I recommend that you pop into an electrical supply store and buy some suitable screw terminal blocks.

Twist the wires together and use the screw terminals blocks to crimp them.

In answer to gookie, yes it does sound fine but I can't help wonder if it would sound even finer as a single run. A bit of a mission moving amp and source closer to the speakers to try out a single run though. Cheers.

Long term, you might want to aim for some type of 'air-tight' contact connection, eg. as cloth_ears suggests. Otherwise oxidation contact deterioration will slowly take place.

That was my short term "if you must" solution.

There is a method for splicing cable correctly... wrapping with a strand of conductor and soldering and heatshrinking... tidy and a good connection...

Hi,

Sound like your mixing Kimber VS with PR series, probably sound okay but I personally wouldnt be happy doing that. I looked at the kimber catalogue and they do have slightly different capitance, inductance, resistance and reactance levels but still pretty close.

I dont think you get the best out of your system the VS is superior (cleaner and more open and detailed) sonically to the PR.

I used Kimber 4VS for a few years and upgraded to 8TC.

Cheers

Steve.
