Ed.1553552749 Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 Some bluerays are fantastic, but others... may as well have got the DVD Two I have been caught out with Baron Munchausen  & Ronin Any others out there to aviod until a bit of remastering is done?
Guest Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 Haha, I almost bought Ronin too. Add Bram Stoker's Dracula to they ho-hum list. And the remastered Star Trek The Original Series for lost opportunity for surround sound. There is lots of additional whooshing of the Enterprise during the credits but almost non-existent surround during the program proper. Some of the souped up special effects jar too.
gooki Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 The original Fifth Element BD (has since been re-mastered), 40 Year Old Virgin, and plenty others. I used to contribute to BD and HDDVD quality analysis back in the day, but haven't bothered for a couple of years now. Try AVSForum.com, hopefully they still have a Blu-Ray quality master list.
Adam1553552670 Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 Must have been different to the Munchausen I saw: I thought it looked great on the whole. It's listed as a 'Tier 1.5 Gold' title on the AVS list mentioned by Gooki. I thought Ronin looked a little worn, but absolutely annihilated the DVD which was a real stinker. The biggest Blu-ray disappointment I have seen in the last few months was Broken Arrow, and more recently The Arrival was quite a let-down.
Guest Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 Is the Region B Ronin an Mpeg-2 encode like the Region A ?

For me, the advantages of blu ray over dvd are as much about audio quality as they are about video quality. I agree that the picture quality of Ronin on blu wasn't much better than DVD but the HD audio track on Ronin was easily superior to the soundtrack on the DVD. This made Ronin blu ray a worthwhile upgrade over the dvd.
