I will decide! Posted June 6, 2010 Posted June 6, 2010 the fisher amp has two phono inputs Hi-16mv and Lo 3.5mv ! does this selection determine what cartridge i use in the record player - either MM or MC ? at the moment i am plugging the phono into aux on the amp, as music sounds like shit comming from my national record player. I am hoping this is due to the national unit amplifier the music before it gets to my fisher amp ! I am working on new TT
Papa Hemi Posted June 6, 2010 Posted June 6, 2010 I would say that the Hi input is meant for ceramic cartridges, the low for magnetic. If the national unit has a tape out, you could plug that into the aux in on the Fisher, then you might get a better sound.
I will decide! Posted June 6, 2010 Author Posted June 6, 2010 tape out = thanks for the tip - changed the cords to tape out, put on "Memory Motel" stones, we found it to high pitched with all the fisher down on treble and high filter on. The controls on the national didn't do anything. Amazing what you learn.. Or would this mean i need a pre- amp "thing" before my fisher, would this be why i cannot plug the national into Phono sockets ?
little blue penguin Posted June 6, 2010 Posted June 6, 2010 What output are you using on the National?

Do you mean that it sounds too high pitched now since you changed the cables to the tape out?

little blue penguin Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 The direct output from a turntable cartridge is very low level signal which deliberately has very little bass and lots of treble as defined by the RIAA. Phono stages have high gain compared with AUX inputs and have a frequency response tailored to compensate for the RIAA defined frequency characteristics of a LP/45. Your National "3 in 1" has this phono stage built in and this will be in circuit before the Rec/Tape Out sockets of the National. The National's tone controls come after this, which is why they have no effect on the sound. The signal from the National should be neutral(ish) in tone, and at a similar level to other sources such as Tuner, Tape or CD (yes I know CD is actuallyslightly higher but let's not complicate things). This signal should never be fed into the Fishers phono stage. Instead it sould be into an Aux or Tape/Rec In. If this is the case, but you are still finding the sound to be too high pitched then either the Fisher is faulty, or the National is. Easiest way to find out is to connect another source to the Fisher. A CD or MP3 player. If the sound is still too high pitched, then the Fisher needs servicing. If the sound is good, then the National is faulty. Hope that helps.
Papa Hemi Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Don't know that national thingy, does it have phno out? If so this should work directly to the Fisher with input selected to phono /low, assuming of course that the national has a MM cartidge mounted.

Those things are really basic and won't have adtrect phono output unless it has been hacked at some stage.

So now - the quest for my first real buy of a true TT:eek:
