Full Range
Christmas eve with a snake in my house Kids were in bed waiting for Santa even though they are young adults It was approximately 11.30 pm the dog heard the noise first and went to investigate His cautious growling alerted me to investigate I was thinking that it may have been Santa placing gifts under the tree ?? My wife at this point also rose from bed to see what was going on before I arrived and seen something moving in the partially darkened dining room She whispered to me? I think there is something there - pointing to the dining table I turned on the light even though my wife protested, the light however revealed the culprit It was a 6 + foot diamond python stretched across the dining table and a little way over a gap to a cane hutch Every time I approached the snake would try and strike at me, one can see from the photo above he/she is ready to strike By this time the kids were up and screaming Lucky I had the camera close and asked them to take a couple of photos I then got a dry mop that is on a long handle and the Diamond Python decided to do a runner or slither away At this point and after a little coxing I cornered it against a wall with the mop Lucky for me I watched a lot of discovery channel TV I then proceeded to grab the snake from the back of the head in snake wrangler style I held it up and even with an outstretched arm above my head the tail of the snake was still touching the ground (sorry no photo of it as the family thought I was crazy and decided to be as far away as possible) I then proceeded to place the snake in a pillow case and afterwards drove it to the RSPCA to be released somewhere in bushland Afterwards when I came back home the dog showed the rest of the family via his nose & following the trail where the snake had been. I can tell you he went in a lot of places in my music room This is a story that will be told for a long time to come Thanks to the snake that came to visit on Christmas Eve Regards FR Edited December 26, 2010 by Full Range extra text

Full Range
cool story, thanks for sharing, and good work on doing the right thing and not trying to kill it I dont like cruelty to any animals A couple of years ago a much smaller snake made its way through the bars to the Cockatiels cage and ate him Then because he was to fat he could not get out again I did the same thing then, I caught & removed the snake from the cage and took it to the RSPCA even though tempers were frail from the other family members after the loss of there friend & pet FR Edited December 26, 2010 by Full Range

Milo
Fr, I can fully understand you wanting to put some distance between you and the snake with the mop, what with it wanting a piece of you. As I said you're braver than me. Yikes, I wouldn't wanna be in the same room, but I bet losing track of where it went, only to pop out unsuspecting on you or your kids later would have been a nightmare. But like Mrs. Milo tells me: Husbands are for spider killing and opening jams jars etc.

And a question would you consider its size of the one I caught " large" or do they grow bigger? FR Hard to tell in the photo probably due to flash, if it was black and had either yellow or green diamonds then it was, if not probably a jungle python. All from the same basic family, it looks about 4 or 5 years old I'm guessing depending on the abundance of food in your area. Mine is about 7 and she doesn't get over fed and is about 12'. I have seen plenty about that size and a few bigger. Edited December 26, 2010 by com5984

Ahh thanks for clearing up the size question The colour by eye would have been dark grey but not as deep as gunmetal the diamond pattern was across the back but it also had triangles on its ribs and the colour of the these would have bean creamy white or close to washed out yellow tint The photo is quite close but slightly lighter in colour due to flash FR
Telecine
check for snake oil in your music room Are you sure that you didn't put him in there looking for some snake oil FR? Nice work catching and releasing him. There is one a good deal larger than that at my fathers place. It has been there for quite a few years. We caught it swallowing whole a rather large possum one day. They are very patient ambush killers. This will be the stuff of family legend over coming years. I was cautious about it but not scared I have on my sig " Inventor" Quick thinking to use something that gave me reach and not hurt the critter was instantaneous and the mop proved to be perfect FR
soundfan
Your da man Full range. Earlier in the year I had a 3 ft long snake crawl in through my bedroom window and disappeared under the bed. I believe it may have been a whip snake but not totally sure. I couldn't find it, so gave up. Guess it found its own way out. I live by the motto, leave them alone and they'll do the same to you.
