Spearmint
Does anyone have any experience with Passive Direct Injection boxes? I'm looking to convert a single end unit to balanced. This is not set in concrete just testing the waters. The unit I'm looking at is the Radial JDI Duplex Mk4 I'm happy to look at active as well, although I'd like something that is basically transparent. Alistair W
If you want to stay passive, a transformer is just the ticket.. Look up Jensen Transformers or Cinemag, they make (admittedly top dollar but worth it) transformers for just this purpose. Might give you some ideas otherwise take advantage of the good exchange rates and wave yr c/c at 'em -Al

Antipodes1553552706
The Proel DI Box is available locally and is a good sounding unit. http://www.jansen.co.nz/product.php?b=10060010&sku=DB1CH You need 2 of them for stereo. If it was me I would perform surgery on it to clean up the signal path. You can get the Jensen DI Boxes here too but they are more expensive, and again some surgery would improve the signal path. If you will excuse me for changing the topic a little, The DI Box route is relatively expensive compared with adaptors or installing a transformer in one of the units. Are you sure that the receiving unit is in fact truly balanced - many consumer products aren't, even if they do sport XLR sockets - particularly amplifiers. Some have a differential input that can also be driven by a single ended signal, and many just add circuitry to receive a balanced signal and then to convert it to single ended. Even in pro audio a balanced input can be implemented multiple ways.
Spearmint
Thanks Antipodes. I'm waiting for confirmation from the supplier, if using balanced to single ended adapters (pin 1&3 shorted) are okay. I was doing some preliminary work just in case. The only unit I've experienced issues with was the Lavry DA10 DAC where using these adapters caused distortion. The DA10 requires one of the pins (installed jumpers for the task) depending on phase to be disconnected internally.
Antipodes1553552706
Either connect 2 hot and 3 ground or 2 hot and 3+1 ground. It depends on the circuit as to which will work best. This is the best reference for this stuff. http://www.rane.com/note110.html
