oakley_nz
wow, this is very unfair to us and the people in the UK/AUS Same TV, but different spec just because they felt like it. And yet the prices are on par with the US and continental europe. Maybe we should ask Panasonic for an explanation.
Mycenius
Always been the way unfortunately - not just with Panasonic... DVRs are a classic - come out in Europe or UK with large HD drive and for NZ they actually go to the effort of replacing it with one half the size just for our little market! Go figure? You'd think it'd be counter productive to have to alter the production line to do a batch especially for NZ? My very first DVD/HDD Recorder from Panasonic came out with IIRC 240GB HDD in USA; when they released it in NZ about 4 months later the drive had 'shrunk' to 80GB! That norm continued for several years until about 2006 - obviously a perception that NZ'ers wouldn't pay the extra for a drive larger than 80GB... Nation of cheapskates - that's us!
mikees
I did ask for an explanation and quote their reply "Thanks for your support of Panasonic, we appreciate it. Each model is customized for the country it is sent to - and yes, there is no LAN connection and some of the settings are different in our NZ version. Something we have no control over unfortunately. It is possible we will get the LAN connection on the next series of TVs, but it won't be till around the middle of next year before we see any. (and no, don't know anything about any of these yet - nothing is confirmed at this point!) However, this is still a stunning TV set, and probably the best plasma model I've ever seen in this size. Firmware upgrades usually only happen if a problem occurs, except for the on-air FreeviewHD ones - these are transmitted during the early hours of the morning." Mycenius
So if the regional people aren't requesting the features be changed, as a manufacturer why would you shag around changing the specs of a model for each different country it goes to? Yeah but that's a tuner - why would you choose to knee-cap a product by removing half its (non-region specific) features for no reason other than you can? Surely that disrupts production and is inefficient...
Ernie1553552694
I agree, I wonder what Panasonic have to say about it? mycenius;107988 wrote: Yeah but that's a tuner - why would you choose to knee-cap a product by removing half its (non-region specific) features for no reason other than you can? oakley_nz
Anyone gonna write an ask? but, given their previous answers, it feels like Panasonic NZ's just a distributor, selling whatever Big papa in Japan sends their way.
Baz1553552744
Woah, if it doesn't do the 96Hz for 24p then I might as well get a good deal on the 850. At least that would make the 58" more affordable. Mmmm, More thinking required!
Baz1553552744
To quote from one of my movies "Assumption is the mother of all f*#@ ups". I forgot that you have the V10 mikeesnz, so if anyone knows what is missing it will be you. I will have to see this demoed before I commit. mikeesnz, do you get 48Hz and 60Hz options for 24p playback? Do you use it, do you care about this feature (i.e. is it something you don't miss). Baz1553552744
On the specs for the V10 on the Aus web site I can see "24p Playback The 24p Playback function provides film-like, flicker free images at 96Hz playback (ie each frame is displayed four times)." But the Aus manual I was looking at did not have any mention of 96Hz. So a possible scenario on the 24p playback is that it is always 96Hz, just not configurable. Here's hoping this is the case. I must be flustered by this, thats 3 posts in a row!
mikees
It is definitely not selectable. 24Hz is not selectable in THX mode so Iam assuming its doing the business. The 24hz mode comes up in the "other settings" in normal mode & palying a blu ray source. There are no other selections for 48,60 or 96.

mikees
It is a great improvement over my 4 year old PV500. The whole picture is much more defined all over. The blacks are definetly much more black & other colours more natural. It does a great job with sky digital ( I don't have hd) & the built in freeview is excellent. The digital out is great as I now get TV3 with DD. As metioned above I haven't yet played with the settings but I find normal with normal colour temp quite good for watching TV (with light on) & the THX for Blu Ray in a dimmed room. Whilst it might not have all the features of US models it is excellent & substantially cheaper than discounted Kuro's.
wallop
Mikeesnz does your freeview guide sometimes skip tv 1 if you loop through the channels? Mine goes from tv2 to 100 (freeview hd demo). Also do you have a white dot in the top left corner when watching tv 1 or 2? Mine does that with non-hd material on those 2 channels. All other channels are fine so I'm guessing it's something to do with the transmission.

Ariki Padlie
On the subject of Plasmas,Has anyone had any experience with LG plasmas?. They seem to undercut the Panny/Samsungs on price...i assume quality wise reflects the price differences as well?

Perhaps visit the AVS forums for reviews of the B850 Baz? http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=167 I have a straightforward mantra when it comes to Samsung products...I would rather not own any. They would have to put out a fantastic plasma at a killer price for me go for one over a Panny. Each to their own but I've just heard of too many issues with Samsung products over the years to ever have the confidence to buy one.

Mycenius
Spoonsey;108302 wrote: ...mirror those I posted above regarding Samsung. Well you obviously haven't seen the P91 mate (and from what I hear it's 2009 replacement)... Their top end gear is surprisingly good and built in a different class to the rest of their ranges... Ernie saw the P91 in action last night so can comment (if he feels so inclined - not sure if he's seen the Panas to compare though)... But yeah, if I was buying one again now I'd certainly be going Panasonic again (my original Plasma in 2003 was a commercial HD Pana). When I bought the P91 early-mid last year it (marginally) out performed the image quality IMO of the equivalent top-end Pana (the model before the 800) and was about 10% cheaper and they had the Freeview Decoder promo too. Mid-year the 800 came out and was comparable PQ wise but probably had marginally better overall features; and then the 850 came out which was obviously better overall with the non-reflective glass and an arguably improved PQ... Don't get me wrong - I wouldn't buy the normal mid-low end Samsung's either - but don't dismiss their top end Plasma model(s), they are in a different class performance wise (and were clearly the No.3 manufacturer after Pioneer & Panasonic)... Apart from Panasonic they are the only other manufacturer putting significant R&D into high-end Plasmas AFAIK..
