Anyone know of a retail supplier of this material, in Akld?

I'm after around 15~16mm internal diam.

It's usually tinned.

I stripped out a RF cable to get some, internal diametre was not an issue as when you compress it the dia increases. This is for shielding, right?

I have stripped RG-type TV cable before, but small diam only, even when expanded - aluminum braid.

Yes, experimenting with shielding.

Also, Alu Foil is a cheap easy solution.

It depends, of course, on what you are trying to shield... ie. LF hum, EM radiation, RF noise...

Is not an Alui foil sheild covered by a copper braid considered best at interference rejection? The Al is a poor conductor but has 100% coverage, the Cu braid has excellent conduction but sub 100% coverage.

I think I read all about that in some old computer networking manual so it may be a little irrelevant, however I note that a lot of IC cables have this system, as does RG6

You'd be correct I suspect. The braid is a good Faraday Shield but the mesh prob allows smaller wavelength radio freqs to penetrate - we're maybe talking 100+khz.

I'm interested mainly in LF hum & the broad audio band.

I did some for my tonearm cable termination, from a spare hunk of RF, got it in front of me now. It spreads out to just about 20mm and is copper

Hey Papa,

Can you give me some details of the RF cable you have, cos a 2nd length I bought on Sat is nice to strip, but expands only to 9~10mm dia max?

This one is Rg6 coax - Ecco Communications - copper 1mm core/foam insulation/silver foil/tinned braid.

I need to get something to expand to ~16mm dia. Thks.

Owen - I'd be hard pressed to tell you the details of the cable other than it would've been the cheapest and nastiest give away sort of cable as I have never bought any RF cable, but seem to have accumulated several lengths from assorted video purchases over the years. I do have one short length I can send to you (200mm drawn out, I'd say less than 100mm at 16mm dia), otherwise I could strip out another cable, but now worry that this was a one off..

RdM, Papa....

Thanks guys, but I'd need a few metres, as I am experimenting with shielding some DIY ICs, prs of which might be 0.75m long.

So, I will sample some more RG6/satellite TV type cable from DSE or Jaycar on the wkend. The stuff I now have is from Surplustronics.

Cheers.

There's a roll of flattened tinned braid at surplustronics but I don't think it expands as much as you've asked for. If you can find them, VGA cables have a good diammeter copper sleeving, cut one off an old monitor or two. That's what I did when blinging up my PC's power cable. A better option for someone in Auckland might be this place: http://www.techflex.co.nz/index.htm I've never got around to investigating the size of the copper braid there though, and the vast majority of the product is plastic sleeve.

About the holes between strands on the copper sleeve letting through RFI: consider that the holes in the mesh on a microwave oven don't stop it from reflecting 2.45GHz, and it is a highpass somewhere above that (visible light goes through). If it's a benefit to have foil underneath, why use Aluminium? It could oxidise if the outer was breached, and become insulated particularly where it's in contact with a different metal, like copper or tin. Does anyone know of a manufacturer that uses copper or brass foil? I wonder if it's mechanically up to the job.

Thanks... I think I spotted the Surplustronics stuff a fortnight ago. I hadn't thought of VGA cable... no more old monitors but will keep an eye open.

As said, with IC cabling I'm mainly concerned about audio bandwidth freqs.

I have found the good quality RG/Sat cable (eg Belden) is dble braid shielded (ie. 2 different diams) & also is wrapped in a heavy gauge alu foil... both of which are of good quality & suitable for reuse for DIY shielding.
