cable lengths - can I mix them

Tamarillo, while I am not going to start promoting the idea of different power cables, I suggest that any cable change ( power, speaker, IC ) you make, make sure your able to trial it in your system for a week or more, then take it back out. Ignore your immediate impressions. Live with it back out of the system for a while. If you just feel that your system is lacking after a few days or a week, then put it back in and pay for it. If you go a week and realize that you are still just as happy, send it back with a thanks but no thanks note attached and remember to buy something from said dealer at some point.

The "Wow that makes a difference" comments irritate me. But the "I lived with it and removed it, only to stick it back in after a while" type of comments are perfectly ok as whatever it is that makes you appreciate the system more with said item in it, obviously is worth the spend.

Make any sense?

TT - I know you were addressing Tamarillo but FWIW I think that makes excellent logical sense...

Well, when someone goes out and buys maybe several thousand dollars worth of cables and proclaims to me "Wow, I never realized that cables made such a difference" it really irks me. If I just spend several thousand dollars on something, I would be pretty much convinced it was going to make something better, and therefore would imagine that it did.

However, I find that new things in my system take a while to show their true colors, if I find that with something new in the system I am listening to more music as opposed to say, movies, or playing on the web, then take it out and find I go back to my other hobbies, I know its made a difference. If I find that taking it out makes no difference to my habits, it goes back to the seller.

Maybe I could eek .01% more out of the system with alternate options for several parts ( or many percent for certain parts I feel ) but to me, its all about money well spent - not having the most perfect and ultimate system.

Money well spent is more satisfying that going out with a blank signed cheque and ordering the very best. I suspect for most on here this is also the case.

it is not an indication that they will or won't work for others. Everyones existing power supply, cables, equipment etc are different, so bigger-better-faster cables will react differently for everyone.

Yes, indeed, but as when you buy items, their for your own system, it only matters what you think..

Unless you me, then everyone should be given the benefit of all your knowledge :D:D:D

hahaha!

I've had the opportunity to play with many expensive cables in my system. With some I've heard a difference straight away (ie the Kimber I have now, and the Siltech I tried a few years ago), others no difference at all, and others I've only noticed after they've gone... its so subjective there's no point worrying about it...

Yes that did thanks, makes a lot of sense and agree that I need to do one thing at a time and live with it a while.

However maybe you misunderstood me - I did not mean that I had done something and 'wow that makes a difference'. I was showing surprise (and maybe ignorance) that the reviewer (John Paul) found such a big difference on a $4000 system from the power cables. Maybe I should have linked to the review so it made sense - http://www.audioenz.co.nz/2009/demoroom.shtml

Maybe he always writes with such enthusiasm and certainty though he bought them so put his money where his mouth is. I simply did not expect the review to report such a marked difference. Now I am wiser.

There is a forum member who sells some good power cables on TradeMe, around $50-60. They're shielded and there's 3x2.5mm of strands. Many have found them remarkable for the price. I've bought three. Generally with power cables the noise background is darker and things are much easier to hear. As with a lot of audio geek stuff, it's hard to write about things and it's sometimes hard to demonstrate things, and everyone has to figure out what's what for themselves.

* I might add... My personal experience is that a greater effect can be noticed when such a cable is used with an Amplifier. The effects were quite subtle when I did the same for my CD player, a small increase in soundtage depth, perhaps a similar level of difference that the vibration support offered.

I was speaking generally, not in reference to something you had said. I understood you. I just would hope that you might live with things for a bit - as you indicated to me in a pm, your system has not been "together" very long so get used to the system as it is, and see how those naim cables work for you :)

  • 3 weeks later...

so here is where i ended up after good advice.

2 equal 4 metre lengths of DNM single wired and matching dnm interconnects. These and playing with placement of speakers and just settling into and listening and i love it. Ain't nought perfect but this lot now sings and offers heaps.

I cannot recommend DNM enough to at least audition - on my system they are just so neutral and clean - I did not know how much other cables were changing the sound until I tried this. Now that of course is subjective - who is to say the DNM is not changing it and others were neutral? I don't know but that is really how it sounds - like the speakers are being allowed to breath and cd is less compressed.

Until more money comes up this will do very nicely and all spare money buys CD's.

I'm a cable sceptic (not a denier), and as far as I'm concerned the law of diminishing returns has to be involved. Obvious example: when I upgraded from a wet string interconnect to a $120 Van den Hul, yes, I noticed a difference. The percentage improvement in audible quality would be, let's say, 80%. When I recently purchased a set of $100 speaker cables from our man on Trade Me, I was substituting them for a set that cost around $300 from a dealer well known to most of us. Percentage improvement in audible quality? Can't calculate. They sound the same to me. So, by spending less and hearing the same quality, is that an upgrade? Downgrade with benefits? And, if I decide next to spend $1,000... oh, I think you get my drift. But I am keen to try a shielded cable at an affordable price, because if it does work I'll buy more from a local bloke who's probably serving up the same appreciable result as the internationals who want $2,000 for some coloured wire.
