The 1.6 has been one of my reference spekaers for the last 10 years or so.

Forget about any old Maggies you might have heard, with the 1.6, the entire line was revitalised.

The 1.6 is one of the best all-rounders at any price.

You don't get the highest highs, lowest lows or thunderous dynamics but you do get a superbly coherent speaker from top to bottom that excels at reproducing music.

Boop1 does seem to be trying to turn a quick buck, TM reveals he bought these off ssegrub for $2110...

You should ask his reasons for selling so soon.

I've heard the earlier ones which sounded nice although lacking a bit of mid range?

The 1.6's don't lack midrange at all. For the money, assuming you've got enough amp and you can have them away from the front wall a bit, they are very, very hard to beat. As Mr Wong said, you won't get the very top or bottom, and dynamics while good can be bettered by some boxes, the overall result is supremely musical.

Cheers,

Craig.

Yeah I noticed he'd only owned them for a couple of weeks......my system is a Plinius M8 and SA50....currently using image studio references which are great in the mid range but lack bass as you would expect form a two way (smallish) speaker.....was considering the 414's as about 2.5K is the limit.... any other thoughts?

1.6's sound awesome in the midrange here at my place. This was running off a pair of my 250w monoblock perreaux custom things. The bass was too lacking for my taste, ( more my taste in music than anything else ) and the top end sounded a little lifeless compared to my main speakers, but, the midrange matched them for pure enjoyment.

As I have mentioned before, bass does not need to go deep, as long as what is there is articulate, detailed and has no boom to it.

The 414s need to be positioned well away from the wall, or you can get a set made with front ports instead. Maybe a sub would be a more viable alternative?

agreed. my 414s are superb but i lack the space to really position them correctly. I once moved the furniture around temporarily, and now i have to live with the knowledge that i'm really under-utilising these fantastic speakers! You try justifying speakers in the middle of doorways...

  • 5 months later...

I have a pair of 3.6"s. Many years ago I had the tympani 1 D's. I loved these speakers. I have a chance to buy a used pair of 1 d's. Any one ever compare the two?

My 3.6's have the Mrye stands and sound great. I remember how much I loved the old one's. They were biamped.

Thnaks

Hi and welcome,

I've heard some early Tympani with the ribbon tweeters and don't rate them against the 3.6 or 1.6, the newer models are much better in almost every way.

The Tymps may have an advantage in lower bass impact thanks to the extra bass panels.

But if they are within budget and you have the space for them, there's no harm in re-visiting one of the classic America speakers.

Have fun !
