Boris1553552671
Apparently a MySky update in the last couple of days means Dolby audio is now available over HDMI (new option in the audio settings). No improvement to audio as such, but 1 less cable may please a few people A new power save feature also. Quote pinched from Geekzone, hope that's OK boss The 2.4.1.3 release for the MySKY HDi has: - green power management (disk spindown on inactivity) - AC3 over HDMI The parameters for the green power management are: - Off (default): no disk spindown - Low: either between 11pm and 5am or 10am and 5pm the disk will spin down after 90 minutes inactivity - Med: between 11pm and 6pm the disk will spin down after 120 minutes inactivity - High: at any time the disk will spin down after 180 minutes inactivity Inactivity is measured as no use of the remote. Mycenius
Cheers Ears - about time on the disc thing - it's been absolutely driving me crazy the last few Weeks with the noise when my system is off!!!!!
Griffy
High: at any time the disk will spin down after 180 minutes inactivity  my HTPC PVR spin drives down after 5 mins of non-activity, somebody call Al Gore - let save the planet one PVR at a time are these Sky HDi system always time shifting or something? that would explain why the drive is spinning so much

It's really really annoying and makes Standby a bit of a joke... Not to mention it is massively shortening the life of the hard drive...
Stuzzo1553552685
Yes, power management well overdue. Did a test of all my appliances recently, MySky HDi burns about 30W (PF 51) both in use and standby. Will try to get a reading on the new options. I'm already on my second unit for exactly that reason - HD failure. I wonder if Sky are getting a few of these, hence management?

nixon76
The latest ads do explicitly state if there are any failures they'll replace the unit. Wonder why they've started saying that.....
Stuzzo1553552685
My readings show MySkyHDi uses about 23W in the "green power" mode as opposed to 30W in operation and standby. Better than nothing but hardly much saving considering the conservative way these new modes are activated. Why not have the option to go into low power mode on standby at least? Probably just an added "Plus" to renting the unit as opposed to owning it- all though IF you owned it it would fall under warrenty and CGA for a while anyway. As I understand it there are a fairly regular stream of unit failures - when I swapped my units out twice early this year I had 2 different techs and both confirmed they were regularly having to swap out HDi units... I've have also heard further anecdotal evidence separately from the IT/Technology industry that there is a reasonable bit of unit replacement going on... (exactly what a 'reasonable bit' is though I don't know). The biggest pain with swap outs is if you have a pile of unwatched recordings...
bellapl1
If they were concerned about replacements the spin down would be turned on by default after the firmware upgrade, most users are not going to know that it is now in the setup menu waiting for you to turn it on. Interesting to hear that it is still using 23w in standby with the drive off, that is terribly inefficient. I'm not surprised though, as I had noticed it is still warm even after the drive has been off for hours.

Not necessarily... You are implying far too much logic and assuming some type of long-term planning beyond 6-12 month frame... I think its just a terribly inefficient implementation - it tries to do an awful lot with a relatively cheap device - so just is a bottomless hole of power consumption! Hamsta
OK - dumb-a$$ techno-luddite question: Tried looking at this on the weekend and couldn't find the power options on the set-up menu anywhere (& yes, I had a good look). Our MySkyHDi box isn't plugged into the phone line at present. Is that required to get the firmware upgrade? As far as I knew it was for Pay-Per-View bookings only. Stuzzo1553552685
It's in Setup--Recording settings--Energy saving level.
Mycenius
Nope - its at the bottom of the recorder set up page (2nd to last in the main menu list IIRC). It's a one line entry set to No by default...

Mycenius
Yeah sorry mate - didn't see your post - by the time I actually came here to reply it didn't initially show your post nor show the page 2 link until after I posted my reply and suddenly a page 2 appeared with your post at the top! bellapl1
It's hidden in the recording setup menu, the firmware should come via satellite and not require a phone line.

bellapl1
I noticed today that the drive spun down 30 secs after I put it in standby. I have energy saving set to high. So it looks like the 180 mins is only if it's not in standby, and I guess at the 180 min mark you lose your ability to rewind live TV until you press a button and it starts recording again. Plus a few seconds probably for the drive to spin up and the memory to start buffering the signal...
