Max Christoffersen wrote an article for me on this subject, back in 1991. It's called My Back Pages.

And anyway, everyone 'in the know' knows it's not about the number of pixels, it's about the sensor size.

Why is it always about size?
:(:D

"Everyone knows" but even the experts get it wrong.

Witness last year's otherwise very good Canon G10, a whopping 14.7 MP. Whooppee, I have more MP than you ! Too bad it's a tiny 1.7" sensor and very noisy.

The recently announced replacement, model G11, retains the 1.7" sensor but with a more sensible 10MP.

Perhaps a case of the people from marketing winning one over on the engineers? ;) Must be an interesting back and forth battle.....

That was the beauty of the Nikon D70 - 6MP on a sensor 3/4 the size of a 35mm film negative was near perfect ratio of pixels to surface area - no sensor noise, and hence no need for extra processing to clean it up as part of the image capture process.
