Gary.M1553552674
I recently completed a rack for my system. I thought I'd share here. Simple enough - just 34mm thick ply panels created by laminating 2 x 17mm together. Tied together with 8mm threaded rod and using 50mm dia stainless tubing spacers. Not cheap to make, but the outcome is great.

Nice classic look Gary - I like how you have used the spacers rather than other DIY designs that use long threaded bolts which look ugly and would be a mission to get perfectly level. Owen Y
Esp like the round metalwork pcs & with the Plinius radiusing. There's all sorts of DIY things happenin' over your place Gary?

You mean the infamous TNT 'Flexy' rack, ugly as sin but it does the job apparently... Attached files
Tonto
Thats the one It does have one benefit in that the shelving is customisable but I can't see how it wouldn't wobble:confused:

No flex at all between the shelves but I dont have it spiked as its in a bedroom and I need to be able to slide it around easily. You can easily hide the threaded rod with the TNT rack by using alloy or stainless covers once you have the shelf settings fixed.
ajst2duk
That's a great rack you got there Gary !! I am truly jealous :-)
AgrAde
Looks fantastic! I have a very similar rack and i'd trust it to hold up a car. Strong as all heck, not a hint of flex.
dts6.1
Very nice! I'm inspired to make myself one...
Colton1553552741
Where abouts in Auckland can you source well finished plywood panels? I've tried the likes of Bunnings and Mitre 10 Mega, but the best finish they have is CD grade which is still quite rough. I don't want to spend a weekend sanding them smooth if I don't have to. Cheers.
Gary.M1553552674
If you don't want to do the finishing you could go to a joiner and get them to make what you want. I lightly sanded mine with an electric sander. Gave them a coat of flooring grade polyurethane. Let them dry well. Lightly hand sanded, another coat... etc. 5 coats each side. Took a couple of months to get it all done and be ready for assembly.
tanman_sg
Surely it shouldn't be too hard to find some nice marine ply in the city of sails A quick google reveals businesses like Plywood City, Plytech, Plyman etc, there's a handful to choose from. I guess from there it depends on who has the best prices (or better customer service). Regarding the surface though it certainly wouldn't harm to sand to a nice finish. Worth some extra effort. Owen Y
Gidday Colton, You need to go to a plywood specialist. Eg. Plytech, Plywood & Panel Products, Plywood City... You need to go look at it, select best price/grade/quality that you need. Check also, delivery charge. HTH

But it was very expensive, and so I went for laminated off the shelf ply. Laminated gave the ability to pick the best side per pair and to use that as the outer surface. Here in Wellington Northpac Timber's manufacturing department did the gluing and cutting for a very reasonable price.
Colton1553552741
Cheers for the comments guys. I had asked to see if anyone else here had good experiences with local companies and would recommend them. @ Gary.M - What glue did you use to laminate the two sheets? Also I'm guessing you got a 2.4 x 1.2m sheet cut that in half, laminated the two pieces then cut the six shelves from that?
Gary.M1553552674
To be honest I don't know what glue they used. I know though that they cut the sheet down to oversized pieces each approximating a shelf size. They were glued and clamped, and when the glue was set cut to final size. Shelves are about 800 x 500 from memory.
Colton1553552741
Today I picked up some 18mm Gaboon ply from Plycity. Nice guys to deal with BTW. The sheets were rough cut at Plycity and I've currently got them glued and clamped together. Also picked up a whole bunch of M20 SS fittings to put it all together once I've got the shelves cut and finished. Will try and post a finished pic. Guest Callum
M20! Must've cost a bit.
Colton1553552741
Certainly wasn't cheap. I tend to over engineer things, and I look the heavy duty look that comes with it. Callum;97240 wrote: M20! Must've cost a bit.
Colton1553552741
She's pretty much complete. Assemble the rack last night and I'm rather happy with the outcome. Just need to level out the shelves and tighten the nuts once I'm happy. Will try and post a picture tonight.

Colton1553552741
Picture as promised. Brought the SS from a few guys through Trademe. Total cost was around $400 including paint, sandpaper etc. Attached files
Cooksferry
Nice. The ply certainly looks better than MDF. Makes me think I should upgrade my bedroom rack. What glue did you use for bonding the ply sheets?
