I finally got round to putting my ex system up on trademe last night.

 

My B&W CDM 1SE's got nine views in less than half an hour before someone bought them using the buy now facility. The Marantz PM-66 KI-S lasted slightly longer (around three hours) before someone else bought it using the buy now facility.

 

Maybe I was selling them too cheaply? Although I do think that my prices were fair.

 

Now its just the CD63 KI-S to go

I see it's up to six bids now. I worked in retail when both the A-400 and A-400x came out. I had a NAD 3240PE at the time, which cost me very little - otherwise I would have definitely considered the A-400. IIRC retail for both amps was around the same price at the time. Good luck!

 

BTW - I see you have a PD-S904. My CD player at the time was the original Pioneer stable platter CDP - the PD-7700. IIRC it wasn't a standard stock item in SA at the time - they had to import it for me. I really did love that that CDP:)

Trademe is a very odd beast - Was cleaning out my shed and put up a pile of scungy old press tooling (very few mating punches and dies) a bidding war broke out and it went for 10 times reserve. Next week I put up a beautiful little US built press and it just crept over my very very low reserve. I'm always amused when bidder "windscreen" leaps on any old audio gear asking for a buy now - I suppose some suckers fall for it.

I reckon 'buy nows' can be very useful. Think of what you would like to get for an item and put it as a buy now. If someone is really keen then they can use the buy now facility and pay a premium for the product. Withno 'buy now' the call to action and risk of losing out is reduced considerably.

 

The way you present your item is really important too - spend a little time and effort cleaning the item up, take good photos, prepare compelling descriptions... it all helps.

I don't think I've seen an auction where he hasn't asked for a buy now

There are several who leap to ask for a Buy Now. Personally it annoys the hell out of me. I agree with King Size about a Buy Now's usefulness - adds a bit of urgency or incentive - but if a seller doesn't wish to use one.......

I sometimes ask for buy nows because I can't be arsed waiting for the auction thing to end, and want instant gratification. if I can't have it now I flag the auction.

 

Most of the time when I ask for a buy now and they give one, some other b'stard is quicker than me and snaps it up before I even get to see it! :mad:

With BUY NOW, someone will get a steal price, for instance, as I recall, $1K for Kreall KAV250a? $1.5K for PLINIUS M16+SA100? $1.7K for Manley Snapper monoblock etc. And they're sold back in TM with double price or more. To catch a bargain is just matter of luck, not as easy as Lotto.

If that happens then the seller is not making the most of 'Buy Now" facility. To me the Buy Now price should be at the upper end of what you expect something to reach through the normal bidding process. Basically the person who chooses to use the 'Buy Now' should pay a premium to secure the item.

Reminds me of a story I was told of some guy who picked up a massively expensive, mint condition Bryston power amp for $100.

 

Apparently the result of an nasty divorce split, sold by woman scorned / cheated.:eek:

 

The guy went around to pick it up and the woman said that she couldn't find the power cable, and offered to drop the price to $80. The guy was utterly terrified that the dream deal might fall through / be legally challenged later if anything was amiss so said he was fine with the original price as he had his own power cable that he'd prefer to use...

 

A story with a happy ending for one , pain for another :mad:.

CD Player now sold after a mini-battle between three bidders. Winning bid was $530, which was $30 more than my buy now. So i'm pretty happy
