Griffy
http://www.tomsguide.com/us/hdmi-hdcp-ethernet-htpc,news-3931.html The drawback to the new HDMI 1.4 specs is that current HDMI cables aren't compatible. Consumers will need to purchase a new cable designed specifically for v1.4; unused wires found in current cable will be replaced with a twisted pair wire structure. As it is, current HDMI cables aren't exactly cheap, and to make matters worse, the upcoming HDMI 1.4 specs will come in two flavors: low-data rate and high-data rate. Glad I brought cheap cables. chopper30
Brilliant! Does that mean that ethernet will be limited to 10-15metres like HDMI is?

Guess it illustrates the problem with spending money on "futureproofing", someone's bound to go and change the rules.
MercuryFree
So with all this talk of 'ethernet' and 'twisted pair', can I take this to believe that my $20 10m Cat6 cable will work just as well as a $400 monster hdmi cable in the coming months?:rolleyes:. I approve. Just as an aside, Monster's most expensive ethernet cable (apparently cat5e 0_o ) at the moment appears to be USD$0.5/foot. Watch this increase tenfold when they rebrand it as HIGH DEFINITION ETHERNET EXTREME PLUS 100000HD SUPERMAN, mark my words.
nixon76
Guys guys - this is soooo last Friday See post 51 onwards http://www.audioenz.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=8126&page=4 Also, in slight defence of Monster, some of their models come with a 'cable for life' guarantee: If the components you purchase in the future ever surpass the performance of the 1000HD you buy today, Monster will upgrade the cable absolutely free So assuming this covers HDMI 1.4, that's not that bad. Interesting to see how that pans out given that it will be complete new cable.

So does a Nordost HDMI cable have a lifetime warranty, but that's of minor significance considering there are so few appliances that require a cable with 1.4 compatibility right now. Just out of curiosity, Murray, what appliances do you have to test the new samples with?

Well there is nothing to test it with as far as I know, Im just receiving a sample thats being prepared for us right now. Within two weeks we should have a couple. The D type connectors are not ready yet so these ones will be A type. They first have to go to ATC for testing. Im not sure if the pix will show the raw cable well here or not? Ernie1553552694
Hmmm, seems like the HDMI 1.4 standard may languish in market disconnect for a while...

I still use a number of 1.2 cables at home and they do everything I need. Most cables will go beyond what they are rated.
