So now we've covered Image are there any other musical sub users out there with other brands?

What brand/model do you use? Music you listen to? How did you decide on that one? Did you compare any others?

I did a forum search but came up with little so hopefully this will be a good thread to flesh out.

For the sake of my findings i'm looking at subs priced around Image Sub12s and the Sub AVI do for my speakers (so around $2500 definitly south of 3k! :o)

Now I've heard Rel/Velodyne/Audio Pro are gooduns but there is a heap of models to sift through. Open to others aswell aslong as there is somewhere to listen to them in AKL or better yet take home a demo!

I've always been very impressed with REL subs in a music system. And I've heard an Image sub doing a good job in a music system too.

My suggestion is use a system that does not require subs to go down to 15Hz- no integration problems and all on 20watts - will need to trade in your original speakers first though.

What's another name for an optional bass unit??????

Whoops 6 question marks and all - what I meant was - bass provided by another brand of speaker that is actively powered & needs to be equalised with your existing speakers - when the total of this group of speakers is what you wanted in the first place from the speakers you first purchased - do it once - do it right :D

It always surprises me that Osborn have not moved onto the W sandwich cone drivers as opposed to the Kevlar ones... If nothing else, they look nicer :P

Or is this Focal not being nice again? They have unusual habits about their high end drivers.

The SGR brand of subwoofers are the best subs I have heard for HIFI.

The pictures in this thread are gone unfortunately but here was Stuarts thread on the 10" versions of the driver -> click here

To view the following threads you will have to be a member of SNA but thought I would post them anyways as they include pictures.

Jasperts Dynaudio C1's + SGR Octagon sub + many many other drool worthy items

Mr Gimlets Merdian actives + SGR Octagon sub

The handy thing is my ADM9s have a sub out facilty which makes them easier than normal to match with subwoofers (similar to a HT amplifier actually).

These sound interesting but may be hard to Audition in Auckland NZ and all I see on the SGR website are naked drivers. Where are specs/pics of the SGR Octagon sub? Would it fall in my $2500 NZD price range?

Might be a tad hard. Sorry. SGR is an up and coming brand in Aus.

Take my word for it I own 2 JL12 Audio subs and they are the best for the money probably in the world but of course someone else has probably claimed that.

They beat the REL's easily and I had two Stadiums for 10 years.

Buy them online from the Sound Doctor Florida.

Read the reviews on their web site from some very reputable Hi-Fi reviewers. I bought them based on reviews and everything they say is true.

They have the basics right: high power, sealed box, overbuilt driver, overbuilt cabinet, myriad of connection and adjustment scenarios.

JL audio have always made some excellent drivers - and the fathom's just exemplify this. I had a pair of 10W6 car audio subwoofers in a home made sub for a few years untill I stupidly sold them.

I had to spend a lot to replace them with something which was near their quality. And then I still miss their dynamics and detail.

Is SGR in any way related to Exodus Audio? Since Adire went on hiatus they've filled the void, Exodus sell the subs and SGR sell plate amps on the audiomarketplace site but I can find no recent reference to SGR subs. The stories sound similar enough for me to ask, and someone mentioned in another forum that their latest SGR purchase was a Tempest.

In the 2007 thread linked to above they claim 40mm of travel (one way or p-p? I could understand it being the former!), and the design they describe (if I interpret correctly, having 2 gaps and 2 separated coils, but not like JBL's DDS) is indeed capable of that, being slightly different and also better than the XBL^2 design Adire used (if I remember/learnt correctly has 2 gaps and one coil between) and I planned on purchasing from Exodus.

So, where do you go for SGR news? Their site is still just a placeholder.

PS: There was a homebuilt boxed and amped Tempest-X (15 inch, ported) on trademe a while back going for $800, it didnt sell. I'd have bought it if I could get to Masterton, and I'd have linked it in the trademe section if I was ALLOWED TO YET. The amp was the discontinued jaycar 350W which has response issues that can be fixed with a soldering iron, I've read somewhere. Would have been worth it though, easily better than an Image Sub12 that uses the Peerless 12" XLS driver that has high inductance and only +- 12.5mm of Xmax, vs the +- 27mm, low inductance, at 15 inches of the Tempest. It's been purged from trademe's records now in the last week, I had the link saved. The driver is immesurably better than the peerless, although I do regard the paper/nomex cone material in the Image Sub12 to be superior to the pressed pulp Exodus's.
