Sunday morning listening

Recommended Posts

Gidday folks,

picked up a couple of albums yesterday for a song, "Sunday morning songs", a compilation of nice laid back tunes by among others, Lemon Jelly, Turin Breaks and Royksopp and "Simply" - Anne-Sophie.

Had a bit of a listen to Anne-Sophie last night, and came to the conclusion that like SACD, Classical needs the wick wound up a bit to get the sheer dynamics from it. Needless to say I couldn't as it was reasonably late.

Another reason for a good headphone setup.

The other, Sunday morning songs, has been playing for the last couple of hours (2cd) and is indeed what it says. Aside from the odd choice of artists (I'm sorry, but as good an artist as Chet Baker is, a guy singing my funny valentine is just wrong) I think this one will get played quite a bit as it's very cruisy and laid back.

Enjoy your Sunday morning folks, and have a great day.

Cheers, Shane.

Regular readers here will know that I dislike most pop-rock. Honourable exceptions are Jefferson Airplane and The Fall. Latterly they've been joined by Supergrass, although I've been struggling with the recent release 'Diamond Hoo Ha'. Its textures are harsh; there's less English charm a la Kinks, Small Faces, The Jam.

Today I've made another attempt to penetrate the glam-rock veneer. Perhaps this is Bolan on steroids? Whatever, songs are starting to appeal. Here's one that summons up the memory of Friday nights circling Cathedral Square in search of girls...

Ever wondered how we all get through

Maybe someone's watching over you

All the shit that we face everyday

It somehow works itself out anyway

In the back of a stolen car

Doing 80 with the headlights off

It's when I needed you

Ever wondered how we all get through

Maybe someone's watching over you

When the ground is falling fast beneath

You somehow find yourself back on your feet

In the middle of a shady bar

Broken bottles flying through the air

It's when I needed you

Hoho, it wasn't stolen, but I remember hooning around the Port Hills with lights off in the moonlight in a mini that had no suspension... Teenage angst and testosterone. A long long time ago now.

And the soundtrack: just the wind whistling through my teeth.

  • 2 weeks later...

Today the sun has bugger all heat so I'm warming myself with the afterglow of the Sixties... Jefferson Airplane created my two favourite rock albums: 'Surrealistic Pillow' and 'Crown of Creation'. Both capture what William Hazlitt called 'the spirit of the age' and, as with the best of any and every generation, transcend it - whereas the intermediate 'After Bathing at Baxters' is stuck in the sludge of its genesis: drugs, free love that (of course) costs, and flights of fancy that crash in flames.

S Pillow is a great lp and one of my favourite 60s releases. There's not a real clunker on the record and I have a soft spot for Marty Balin's vocals.

For some strange reason the only J Airplane record that has survived with me from that time is Bless Its Pointed Little Head which I dont rate very highly. Dont know why I sold S Pillow and Jefferson Airplane Takes Off which was another on high rotation back then.

Crown Of Creation totally bypassed me and I'm only familiar with a few tracks like Lather and Triad, dodgy sentiments and all in these pc times.

What is this selling music that you talk of?
:D

I never sell any of mine - I might give stuff away occasionally that I really don't like any more but never anything I want to keep.

Cheers, Shane.

Called poverty. Familiar story, children arrive, one wage, hobbies disappear.

The good news is, children leave and hobbies reappear. It's just that 20year gap in between that's the bugger.
