I searched for Technics SL-1200 thread in this forum but didn't find one. If there is one please point me to it. Otherwise welcome to the Technics SL-1200 thread! [emoji3]

I just bought a stock Technics SL-1200 MK5G from Japan. Just received it last week. I also just bought a Tortech step down transformer to provide power and yesterday bought the four little wires that connect tonearm to cartridge. I already have a Denon 103 and am going to use that.

Now I just have to put it all together and hope it works.

I have just discovered that I need a cartridge alignment tool which I don't have. Anyone know where I can get one in Adelaide? I may just wing it and see what happens.

If it all works......there may just be a long upgrade journey coming. All suggestions and comments welcome.

Thanks Duc. The alignment tools only costs a few dollars on ebay but it comes from overseas and hence a bit of a wait........

I bought the Japanese one because it was advertised as near mint. Also it is a MK5G - a better version. The transformer was AUD 65.

Pretty sure my M5G's have a 110/240 selector under the platter?

Also don't think the M5G's were sold here, but could be wrong...

I couldn't get the platter off. Is there a trick to it?

There are two holes, that's where you can put your fingers in.

Rest thumb on middle and pull both sides upwards.

Should come off easily.

Also, the whole allows access to the voltage switch if it had one, turn the platter slowly to see if you can see a switch.

Ps, how much you payed for the mk5?

Edit, my switch look like this under the platter. 20160124_131236_zpsvmlwe7hl.jpg

That's a break. Would save a tranni purchase.

When I put my fingers into the holes and lift, the whole tt lifts. The platter won't come off.

I did have a look for a voltage switch using the hole but did so briefly. I will have a good look. Thanks for the tip.

Good luck, I replaced the arm on mine with a modded Rega, made a big difference

Which arm did you use? Also was it easy to do? Did you have to get it done professionally?

You can order an accutrak protractor for your turntable here http://www.accutrak.us/technics-1200-mk2.html

You can order a pdf from Ken for $US10 to use immediately and if you like it grab the plastic version from him (he'll refund the cost of the pdf preview version)

They are great protractors

Thanks. This will be useful if I change the arm.

Put your thumb in the centre, it should provide counterweight against the tt lifting up.

An rb-250 with Mitchell counter weight and Incognito rewire. Replacing the arm is very easy, just requires unbolting the old arm, putting in a new arm board (I used an Origin I bought on SNA) and installing the new arm.
