Maybe, if you can live with the chance of one of the unobtainium bits of the electronics never failing and it's been fitted into a plinth that does it justice with a worthy tonearm. Mind you, how much does a mint (genuine mint that is) SP10 go for these days? Mk2 and 3?

Depends which model you have ... the MK 2's electronics are all still replaceable including the IC's

The MK2A apparently does have unobtainium IC's that cannot be replaced.

There is no performance difference between the MK 2 and Mk 2A ... the only difference was the A version had pitch control.

MK 2's can go from $500 to $1500 or more depending on the condition ... that's just the bare TT and power supply ... no arm or Obsidian plinth as shown in the photo's above.

The above photo's are of the SL1000 MK3 and SL1000 MK2 which consisted of SP10 motor unit, SH-10B3 Obsidian plinth and EPA-100 tonearm ... these are obviously more expensive as a unit as they are harder to come by.

I've seen an SL1000 MK2 for $9000 in Canada not long ago.

Orpheus sold an SP MK 2 for $400 on here just before Christmas ... cosmetically it wasn't great ... but it was working fine.

MK 3's are rare and can go for silly amounts of money ... $5000 to $10000 or more

Got some competition for it here , when it arrives. :)

Is that your MK 3 in the top photo?

Some first impressions from Stereophile.

Technics are tuning the feet to below 10hz resonant frequency , same as they did with the SH-10B5 plinth.

Interesting they say both versions will be 4k.

Wonder if thats a missprint otherwise whats their thinking and justification there

I reckon it will sound good, and could even be competitive with other brands at 4,000 USD. As far as direct-drive players go, the Pioneer PLX-1000 is already a good performer at under $1k and then there's a big price gap before you get to Brinkmanns, then direct VPI, etc. So there is absolutely a gap in the market that can be filled here.

The only thing I question is the decision to call it a 1200. Obviously the 1200 name carries a lot of history with it, so the marketing department probably wouldn't allow Technics to release a new turntable and call it anything else. Even if it sounds much better than the old models, a lot of people aren't going to understand the point of an SL-1200 that costs this much. DJs aren't going to like the idea of spending 8,000 USD on their favourite turntables. I feel like Panasonic could have sold a lot of units by re-releasing the SL-1200MK2 unchanged at the old price, and could have sold a decent amount of units to a different market by releasing this new turntable under a different name.

edit: but yeah, here i am. some guy on a forum, telling a gigantic multinat corporation how to run their business.

the 2nd version has the magnesium arm...

all this will only leave people wondering which one to get ! the ltd edition or the later...

they intend selling 3 mil of one and then another 3 mil ??? wow

what I am more intrigued with is the revival of the technics brand….. some very interesting other gear there !

I read it as the ltd edition version will be 4k and 1200 units

The next 3 mill will be regular edition also for 4k.

you are correct,

"The first 1200 "Limited Edition" examples of the new Technics SL1200GAE will be sold for $4000. The next 3 million will be "regular edition" 1200s and substitute an aluminum tonearm for the magnesium one. They will cost $4000 also."

I misread that as 1200 as in the model number :D and when they said next 3 mil thought gee they are going to sell 3 million and then the next 3 million hehe

yes I don't completely get their model no's / naming or pricing though time might tell more.

I don't believe they have stated any intention to sell 3 million of them.....that is how many sl1200mk2 were sold during its whole 30 plus year lifetime.

The biggest selling turntable of all time.

Most likely the reporter is just having a joke in reference to that .

No official release of pricing information from Technics yet either , but if it's correct that the limited edition magnesium arm version and the standard aluminium arm version released later in the year are the same price , then obviously if interested in one best to get in early for the limited as only 1200 are to be made.

I'm curious as to whether we will be able to buy this In Australia as it is part of the new Technics Reference class line, non of which 12 months or more after release have been available here. Maybe it will end up like Sony's high end ES loudspeakers that have never seen light of day in Australia.

I saw some the new technics power amp and giant floorstanders in London recently, wow, what absolute beasts, and so well made and finished, things of beauty!

Whatever happened to that mock up SP10 lookalike they showed last year?

Anyone heard any more?

It was a SP15 mounted an acrylic plinth, with three? arms, is that the one?

If so one of our members did those mods and still owns it, Kcc123. He has posted pics of it here and on other forums.

They nicked that pic off one of those forums to make that hoax page.

We all know the 1200 is the ATV of the turntable world. Tough as, unbreakable, reliable. The Landcrusier of turntables. Not fast, but gets the job done.

I imagine the new model is every bit as tough, but now with air conditioning.

If you dont want to go off road and want a deck that sits on the shelf, its like most Landcrusiers. Most never see a gravel road.

I'd buy one as an investment if I could, as the first limited release model will appreciate, just because of what it is. If you want a 2wd sports car, maybe its not your thing but some DJ's will still like it.

Some will get used and abused, some will never see dirt. So if you want to be a soccer mum in an off road car that never goes off road, line up. But dont expect fast 1/4 mile times.

$4k is about the right price given inflation since the original was introduced in 1972.  And remember that did not have an arm as standard nor a cartridge.

I'd like to have one of these. After all those countless night working as a sound guy doing DJ events over 6 years, and owning 4 1210's and 2 1200mkii's, kinda makes me want one as a prize for putting up with so much crap (night club scene is bloody hard work)
