A conical at 2g is finished in 400 hours, half that would be the first degradation in the sound and tracking ability so that is the parameter they must have used for the specs. Chris 2
Vinylear Posted February 2 Posted February 2 $135 us for a user replaceable stylus. Not too bad when you think about it. 1

astormsau Posted February 17 Posted February 17 I picked up a SL 1200G late last year after six years with a Michell Gyrodec, HR PSU, Audiomods s6 tonearm and VHD DDT2 cart. I found I really struggled with the Gyrodec even though it was a thing of beauty. I found the routine of spinning the platter and then starting the motor, moving the arm over and waiting for the bounce to reduce (from spinning the platter) and then gently flicking the tonearm lift (not too much as to introduce bounce) was too much hassle for me despite the glorious sound the deck produced. It simply meant I stopped playing as many records as I did when I had my Rega RP8 and went more to my streamer. So the 1200G arrives, perhaps not quite the sonic equivalent in terms of staging as the Gyro but the 1200G does produce a great sound and it’s very stable speed and ease of use mean I’m listening to my records again which is the ultimate goal for us all hey! 11

It’s been a few years since I had the RP8 but The Gyro with the RB330 (before I went to the Audiomods s6) was a big step up from the RP8 in terms of black backgrounds and staging width. I found the RP8 to have a bit of motor noise (I can still hear it on recordings I made to my reel to reel) but it was less fiddly than the Gyro to use but isolation was an issue with the RP8. The Audiomods on the Gyro took it to a new level above its stock form. I couldn’t ask for more sound wise than the Gyro.. until the belt wore and it got wowwwyyyeee I feel the Technics doesn’t lose much to the Gyro with Audiomods arm combo and in some ways I find its drive and low end much more enjoyable and the pitch stability and isolation is very good. 2
kffern Posted Thursday at 01:12 AM Posted Thursday at 01:12 AM I am planning on building a new 2 arm plinth for my SP10 II. The second arm will be 9" and on the top. Something like 44Maloo has built. I have found some Jarrah which should be enough for 4 layers of 19mm , 550mm x 43mm. I will have to add some Jarrah on top or have the armboard hanging off a bit. I am a bit confused with the plans that I have and was hoping someone has made a template or better still has a spare plinth lying about. I don't want to tear down my TT as its bloody heavy and I do want something to listen to while I work on the replacement. Any advice appreciated. Kffern
Warren Jones Posted Thursday at 11:45 AM Posted Thursday at 11:45 AM There is a plinth cutout plan in the service manual. I also have a DXF of the chassis if you have 2D CAD..
kffern Posted Friday at 01:25 AM Posted Friday at 01:25 AM Thanks Warren, I had that downloaded but missed it. If I get it printed out on paper will it be to scale? I tried that on a Lenco plan but it didn't print exactly.
plexxx Posted Saturday at 01:11 AM Posted Saturday at 01:11 AM Any thoughts on what would be a better match for a 1200 GR2? A Nagaoka MP-110 vs Grado Prestige Gold 3? Anyone here have experience with each? The MP-110 seems to have better reviews than the Gold 3 but is lower cost.
hugo_wilco Posted Saturday at 01:55 AM Posted Saturday at 01:55 AM (edited) @plexxx I have the GR2 and have the Nagoaka MP-100 amongst the many cartridges I use. Of all the turntables I have the best synergy has been the Nagoaka. You won't go wrong with the MP-110. Edited Saturday at 01:55 AM by hugo_wilco 2
