SP10 platters are balanced RIGHT - wrong. I have 4x SP10mk2's  and none of the platters are balanced.

The plasticine on the platter is 1.4g

The balancing spindle is a very close slip with less than 0.02mm total runout running on ABEC11 bearings, It's sitting on jack stands ATM but it's level. I need to build a proper frame.

I dont think platter balance is super important with SP10 as torque is so high, even the sl1210mk2 does not seem to care about balance when looking at wow and flutter, but the new G motor HATES imbalance and if platter is off wow and flutter increases hugely. The SP10mk2 I can put a huge weight on the side of the platter and wow and flutter is still the same so from my tests dont worry about it.

Of the 4 OEM platters I have all have the damping material coming away some are worse than others. Removing the damping reveals very poor bond to the platter, this is most likely due to the age of the contact cement used to glue it on. Also the damping is not glued to the entire surface reducing its effectiveness.

A stock platter with 20mm POM bolted to the top. The ring test was the best OEM platter I had.

Another platter made from POM for a friend. The POM sits directly on the motor and there is a gunmetal insert in the bottom to lower COM. Decoupled spindle so the motor spindle has no contact with the LP.

This one is so good I'm now making another for myself.

When I rebuilt one motor I removed the spindle from the rotor. The spindle from the factory is glued into the rotor. To rectify this I made a brass insert, both the insert and spindle are now a press fit.

Damping was also added in the form of Blu Tack to both the rotor and motor housing.

Next mod is a new 10mm spindle and PTFE bush in place of the bronze.  The main reason for this mod is to delete the C clip which reduces spindle diameter and will allow the spindle to flex just above the bearing sleeve.

Found this is in a 1972 Australian HiFi magazine. Review of the original SP10 (known as SL1000). Priced at $672. That’s $7,200 in 2021 dollars.

And a little off topic - check out the editorial - unbelievable. Industry protection must have been important back then.

To put this in perspective

Sydney median house price in 1972 was about $64k so it's a tad more than 1% of the median house price.

I don’t want to go into the SP-10Mk3 here, as I haven’t seen any out there in the wild yet. But I am looking forward to the SP10Mk4’s data. (Hello Panasonic, wake-up call!)

I think we all know what he meant, he wrote a well written article otherwise, a simple error does not make him an idiot. You have never met him either, I am sure he is far from an idiot.

Hello Technics owners.  I have recently acquired an SL-7 linear tracker TT that was in good condition before I made a clumsy mistake checking the cartridge in it.  Just wondering if this is the right place for me to share the details of my misadventure (and stupid clumsiness - sigh) and to seek assistance, or whether there is another forum / thread that you suggest I raise this in.  Please forgive if I am posting this in wrong place ... Thanks, Rob (in Melbourne)

Hi Robert

might be worth posting on the main turntable page , rather than this sub forum , as you can see, they always a high traffic zone

Joined the club on Saturday and it’s barely had a break. I woke up this morning around 6am and pretty sure it was on within 15mins, feet tapping, coffee in hand. So good.

Just an update on my ownership as I sit here currently listening to the 1200 gr.

The deck has really been impressive and I have used it way more than I would have expected for a cd man.

I’ve not done any tweaks not even the mat.

It’s a great deck for guys like me that like to keep things simple and are not TT gurus.

It so rock solid, the stop / start is great and the sound is engaging without being to wooly.

I’m totally stoked 😄.
