Seeking opinions - Sonos 5.1 surround set-up

Recommended Posts

 Hi all,

Currently have a very nice 7.1 set up (focal chorus V), but we have moved into a house with a much smaller theatre so not much room for my set-up, as well as having an 11 month old to worry about (towers falling over etc.).

I'm now faced with (read as 'being forced by my wife to') considering selling up and getting a Sonos 5.1 set-up that takes up very little space and can all be wall mounted out of harm's way.

What are people's experience with a Sonos surround set-up? I've read the set up to go is a play bar, 2x play 1's and a sub. I already have a play 5 plus sub in the lounge for music and am pretty impressed with sound quality.

Lay your opinions on me!

P.s. I tried to find relevant threads in the search function but none came up, sorry if this has already been discussed

Hi Jamie.

I have never used Sonos so I can't really comment. I have never had little people in my house either, so I will not be much of a help. Congratulations on the baby by the way!

I do know that some members have been, or are in, your situation, because I remember seeing pictures of baby "fences' protecting the equipment and of course the little person. Maybe that would be an option? Once the child gets to an age and has an understanding then they get trained in, respect of the equipment and some members get them involved at a very early age. IE their own music, dancing at the hifi ect ect. Can't start them too young :)

Hopefully a member with "little people" or experience with Sonos will be along soon.

Ultimately that is all that matters. If it sounds good to you and is a solution for the little people, just roll with it. :)

Sonos really is great, but I think you would probably be a little disappointed perhaps, not because its a bad product, its just you're coming from a very traditional and (more than) capable system!

Certainly the ease of use will be a big plus for all concerned. My advice would be to get yourself down to your nearest specialist who can demonstrate the setup you seek and you can then make the call on whether it is acceptable to you (or not!).

I will say that Sonos is probably one of THE most reliable products out there, puts some high end brands to shame!

Right @DarkNark I'm outta here, see you in the pub in 45!

I have Sonos Play 5s as a means to distribute music in the house. Very easy to setup and use, good customer support, reliable as pointed out earlier. Audio is ok but I have doubts about them replacing a home theatre setup, which I also have. But suggest you listen for yourself at shop and as a home theatre setup.

Alternately, if you want small, look at a sub sat setup. Hang them on the wall if you must. A lot cheaper than Sonos.  Ultimate WAF option and kid friendly is in-wall, but have to knock holes in wall, can be expensive.
