I have my Sony 4K tv hooked up to my Plinius/Dynaudio system. In the past I just ran RCA from tv to amp but now have put a Schiit Modi 2 between the two via optical. I listen to the Foxtel music channels and youtube clips. Do you think it would be worth putting a better DAC in the chain? Would it be a waste since some of this music is fairly compressed?

Cheers.

I am interested in this too.  I watch a lot of Netflix through my two channel set up.  Plus a bit of music from youtube and at times will hook up my PC to stream Tidal ( via HDMI to the TV ) I have the HDMI going from my Optus Box to the TV and then the TV Optical Out to an intergrated amp with a DAC to the speakers. It is a SONY TV as well.

Would much be happening to the signal ( the 0's and 1's ) before it hits the DAC in the intergrated?  Would spending money on a DAC be worth it over the DAC in the Amp?

The Intergrated Amp is the Indiana Line Puro 800.

Would the DAC be able to put out surround sound though? I think that's only possible through ARC, but if it doesn't matter, then the Modi is fine, maybe upgrade to a Modi Multibit when you find one for sale. Had one of those a while back and they were a super DAC.

I was looking for a simple solution  as my hifi  in the tv room  only had analog inputs  and new oled  tv  had  optical out

The pro-ject  dac box e  works wonderful  no buttons to turn on or off  and sound quality is terrific

I have several systems and wanted to keep  this one  simple

I did try one of those cheap small dacs it worked ok but this is much better

Only problem is  this model isn't imported into Australia  so ordered it from analogue seduction in the uk

I also use Foxtel to listen to background music, very ordinary output quality . . . recommend saving your money.

Hi,

generally speaking better DAC sounds better the same way as better (more expensive) AV receiver sounds better than cheap ones. AV receivers and sound bars are quite often connected to TV by optical cable.

Dolby atmos requires HDMI.
