I know there is some water under the bridge still to flow but are there any sure locks for the Ashes?

My locks are Smith, Paine, Cummins, Hazlewood, J Richardson.

Starc will be there after returning to form in the last test.

As your post suggests, it’s the batsmen that will be hard to pick..

Ummm, a bloke called Lyon???

As much as I think Paine has done an fine job as captain under very trying conditions, has his batting been up to scratch? Seems to have had many gritty starts but only compiled any runs on flat tracks.

It concerns me that Wade is the inform batsman of the summer, and was gloveman and captain of Tasmania ahead of Paine. I'm not saying he should replace Paine in the side but he should certainly go as a batsmen and back up keeper.

I believe Maxwell is overlooking IPL to play County cricket. Give the bloke a spot in the touring party

Please no more Maxwell worshipping. If he was deemed good enuff to wear a Baggy Green he would now be a regular. He is now in the back end of his career with only a handful of Tests under his belt. He needed to be smashing down the door in red ball domestic the past two summers to have any chance of an Ashes berth. Does he get to play the final five Shield rounds?  Wade has been tried as Test keeper/batsman and was found wanting in both departments. Going on his recent omission from all formats he appears to have been wiped from the CA radar. Lyon of course.

If anyone is close it is Patterson who ticked every box in his first two Tests. He impressed many with his simple, stylish manner and strong temperament. He also pulled off the most stunning close in catch I have seen since Smith a coupla years back.

When does the Shield restart? I get red ball withdrawal symptoms when the Test summer concludes.?

I don't worship him, just don't know why certain guys don't get a fair go when the Marsh's kept get 3/4/5 chances despite poor records.

How does Maxwell get to smash down the door with red ball cricket when CA schedule him to hardly ever play it? He did score a double ton early in the Shield season then they take him away to play ODI's and tell him he then needs to rest rather than playing in the 2nd 11 tour last year before the Pakistan tour???

Certainly there appears to be politics behind the scenes as to why he is not playing test cricket, or at least in the squad.

I don't think CA should have the ability to wipe anybody from the radar going by current form. Theirs and the teams

Maxwell suffers from his own reputation as a white ball/flat track show pony. Funnily his record shows he is not all that flash at this either. It is called inconsistency. Maxie is not the only cricketer being mucked around at the moment. Ashton Agar has a central contract but when was his last game for his country? Keeps making squads but ends up as the drinks carrier.  The poor bloke must be wondering what he has done wrong.

Left arm finger spinner doesn't offer up what a right arm wrist spinner does in regards to team variety and balance. But he has done nothing wrong either.

No 5 ranking in the world as a T20 batsman, No1 ranking as T20 all rounder. Not sure what records you are looking at. He's still ranked 3rd of Aus batsmen in ODI's and 30th in the world. Doesn't do much bowling in ODI's anymore, but still ranked 27th as all rounder

I should have clarified ODI. His T20 record is improving while his ODI is dropping.

I see Agar as a Vettori clone. The Kiwis were happy to have him as its main slow bowler for many years. Reckon Lyons improvement has hampered Agar's career. Still he is young and Lyon must retire some time.. But he needs to be playing some format and CA wont let him.

Stats can be deceiving in ODI's. I believe Maxwell suffers from batting too low in the order, often with too much to do with too little time. He is prepared to risk his wicket and do his best for the team rather than just scoring at a run a ball and getting a not out to help his average.

Maxwell does avg in the high 40's in Shield. About the 4th or 5th highest avg, including a couple of guys above him who are on "holidays"

Agar has been getting spots in Australia A touring teams so is still on the radar.

He certainly had a memorable test debut but that was in 2013.
