Sub connect to two amps

Recommended Posts

Hi all
I use a surround amp for surround duties currently hooked up and working well as 5.1 with a Dali Ikon sub which has LF and left right connections. Currently connected to LF on the sub. I use a power amp and pre amp which has sub out from the pre for music(priority). I am thinking about connecting the stereo system to the sub and only ever using one amp at a time. I think this might work and have two sub cables, one with LF and one with left and right. Will this work and which cable would be better for music(priority)?

Any thoughts appreciated

caution

Yes caution is the word. I just think I may be able to put the sub to good use with music. The surround amp does currently mainly live on standby(rarely used) and both amps would never be powered up at the same time. Not willing to try unless somebody has successfully tried this!

Yes.   You are only using "one amplifier" (the one inside the subwoofer).   The feeds coming from the surround processor, and your preamplifier are both "line level".

Each input on your subwoofer may work differently (eg. it may have/not a low pass filter, or how the L/R/LFE are summed together, or not) .... You would need to consult the manual.

consult the manual

Excellent idea! The sub manual says LFE for surround and L/R for stereo with sub. The pre amp is an Arcam FMJ AV8 which I use in stereo direct mode. It has plugs on the back for 3 subs and can be set for stereo + sub so I think I will give it a go using the sub cable that has L/R at the sub end and sub plug at the other. Seems to be safe to see what happens. The LFE uses the surround amp settings and the L/R uses the sub's crossover. Hopefully I am on the right track. Will wait for some spikes for the sub to arrive from China before attempting anything.

Thanks

I am running the same kind of setup atm that you're suggesting. Dedicated HT amp that has no pre outs on it, which is why I use two amps. The second amp is for music. HT amp into RCA left, Stereo amp into RCA right into the sub and a speaker switch for the mains. I never have both amps on at one time and have had no issues with my sub (Sunfire HRS12) with a good volume level using just one RCA so sub gain is less than 12 o'clock. I've been running this setup for over a year with no issues, but you have different equipment to mine so use caution. If Dali gets back to you even better.

I'd like to mention that this is me just making do with what I have and would love to get AVR with pre-outs and a nice power amp for mains to beef up 2 channel listening.

Good luck!
