G'day,

Marconi Union - Distance -- soothing electronic textures with wispy guitar ... imagine a cross between Labradford and Eno and yer halfway there. Just beaut IMHO.

Indeed... I'm really liking this!

Thanks for the sensational suggestions in this thread from all posters. It has exposed me to artists that I would otherwise never have heard of!

have not heard of hidden orchestra, but the other albums mentioned are amazing, especially Breakage.

Anyone in Sydney interested in a (discounted) dance floor ticket to the Shpongle concert at the Enmore on the 15th?

I have a spare, send me a PM.

Youtube video on this link, gives us an indication of what is in store.....

http://www.enmoretheatre.com.au/events/2011/01/15/shpongle-live-in-concert

That is a very kind offer, at this stage I am attending Rainbow and will see them there. If anything changes, I will PM you. It promises to be a great show!

It is great to see the action on this thread - there is enough brilliant electronica to warrant an active and informative thread on an audiophile website. Hopefully this spreads the goodness to people have the musical literacy to appreciate this style of music.

Do you have to dance if you are in the dance floor section? :)

They look pretty amazing, unfortunatly I think I'm booked out that night :)

Hidden Orchestra - Night Walks

James Blake - Klavierwerke EP

Doobius, I don't any of these people - I am indeed out of it. Could you add a few words of guidance re the style/mood/feel of these artists!

Breakage is a well-respected uk dnb producer who has shifted into dubstep territory. Foundation is a mix bass-heavy styles (guest artists include Burial, Roots Manuva and Newham Generals).

I'm not all that familiar with Hidden Orchestra but I like Night Walks. Driving beats over lush dark soundscapes; an interesting blend of traditional instruments and heavily layered samples. Check out details here: http://www.hiddenorchestra.com/night-walks/

and James Blake are dificult to describe. They have both been called post-dubstep; not a particularly useful term I know. Best if you have a listen yourself.

James Blake has a new album dropping Feb 7 and I'm also eagerly awaiting release of frequent collaborator Airhead's new solo effort "Empty 9-volts", the single

is a cracker IMO.

Thanks doobius, above and beyond. It all sounds good. I've followed up several other artists in this thread already and I am only up to page 2. I'll be in the poor house by the end of the year.

I've been listening to the Shpongle set of utube vids for a while now (since it was posted up there). Seriously thinking about trying to get out of my committments this sat night to take uo that ticket offer...

Westernsyntetics - May Day Radio (Rhyece O'Neill),

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, I heard an interview with him on JJJ's soundlab and really enjoyed what he had to say + the sounds.

Rhyece's roots were in punk and although the music has changed he retains the sentiment. Dark and brooding, sort of reminds me of Orwells 1984 in musical form, man against the machine.

Should be a very entertaining concert, I cant wait. They dont do many gigs, I dont know if they'll ever be back? I always get floor tickets when they're available, but I only ever dance if the performers get me in the groove ! :nana

I believe that they will be playing new stuff - this will not be the same as the DVD version. I am really looking forward to hearing them outdoors.

Also, I have been listening to:

"Beneath the Surface", VA, Native State Records (I have been enjoying there stuff recently)

IDM, psy chill, psy dub, down tempo. A very enjoyable listen. Well produced and includes artists like Rena Jones, Desert Dwellers and Sympath.

Third Ear Audio, "Third Ear Audio", Dubmisson Records

One of my reference albums for bass. An excellent dubby album, layered and beautiful. All Nick Barber's music is special, whether under the moniker of Doof, Vatos Locos, or this project.

When Houdi started this thread I must admit to thinking that it would die a silent death with not enough interest to sustain it. I'm so glad to see that this is not the case, and that so many are finding this thread a use full resource, as in deed I am. Electronic music has been a great font of enjoyment to those lucky enough to get into it for a lot of years now.

I followed that link of Doobius' to Hidden Orchestra's site, and wow, that's just the sort of excellent Jazz inspired music I love and need, gotta get it.

Loads of other top stuff from others recommendation too, so I just have to say thaks to Houdinifangs for doing the business and all other contributors for their input, this to me is the best aspect of SNA.

Master Margherita, "Hippies with Gadgets", Peak Records

One of my top 10 albums, an exercise in mixing analogue and electronic instrumentation.

Ambient, dubby, worldly. Seriously brilliant. Check out his other album "Mastura" and FLAC releases via download on Baksheesh Music.

Dubsahra a.k.a Greg Hunter, Digital Downloads from Baksheesh Music

Complex rhythms, remixed arabic music - but rather than sample cd's, Dubsahara uses music that lovers of arabic music actually listen to.

another couple of old Kraut Rock from the 70's I've been listening to:-

Just checked out Master Margherita on peak, very good indeed. Then checked out his 'MPC' album on Bakshish, and thought to myself WTF? very dark, primitive, and repetitive(not that there is anything wrong with that if thats your cup of tea), but very different to the 'Hippies with gadgets' album. Then actually read up on the album, and realised it was his earlier stuff, before he succumbed to the computer for producing.

If you have not already, also check out Peaking Goddess Collective's Organika on Peak. It's another great album that blends organic and electronic sounds.

Listening to: Heyoka - 'Marklar' on Muti music. wobbled out glitch hop goodness.

Some Flying Lotus tonight

I saw him live on the 8th (sat night) and it was reallllllly strange. He played with a live band and it just didnt work and seemed pretty unnecessary. Was a good gig, but not the live dj gig that i really wanted

I would have loved to seen his show in Brisbane recently, but due to living out in woop woop and work commitments was unable. Would have been interesting, not sure how he would done most of his music with a live band, still would have been great to see.

Thanks for that, I already have that album and it is a beauty. In that vein, also on Peak and in a similar style to Peaking Goddess Collective, try Flooting Grooves, they have two ablums out "Upsyde Down" and "Psyde Burns". Many of the artists in Peaking Goddess Collective work in that side project. The compilations on Peak are hard to find but well worth buying.

This morning I a have been spinning one Classic and newbie:

The classic must have for any library of electronic: Abakus "That Much Closer to the Sun", Liquid Sound Design: a chill out album that everyone likes. Listen out for the remix of Hendrix. Also, if you do buy this, try to get the Japanese release as it has an extra track. Groovy and soothing.

The Newbie: Tipper, "Broken Soul Jamboree", Tipper Music. Proper psychedelic down tempo. Tipper is prolific and talented. In many ways I see this album as the follow up to the seminal album of his "Surrounded". Dub step wobble in track 2 is outstanding. I was lucky enough to see Tipper last year - he is a great producer.

Clan Analogue - Cog

Compilation of early 90's Aus electronic dance music. Takes me back to some very weird warehouse's in inner city Sydney during that time. When you had to call on the hour for the 'secret' location...memories...

Too frightened to listen to him!

His album Stalker with Robert Rich is probably the creepiest thing I've heard.

Dunno if I've heard "Stalker", but I have Lustmord's "The Place Where The Black Stars Hang", and that's a creepy CD ... howls and drones from the deepest, darkest recesses. Just the thing to brighten up one's day.
