Not to be confused with Cooking Vinyl, Cooking Records was a fab label, sadly no more. Then Forest Swords Compassion. Incredible album, stark and atmospheric.

Here's one that challenged my taste and persistence to the absolute max. Squarepusher, "Be Up A Hello". I can't say I don't like Drum and Bass entirely as I've got a few albums that I have enjoyed the genre through but I'd say 99% of it would never get a gig in my system and only half of the remainder a second play. Years ago Kosheen (remember them) showed me that there's more to D&B than one skittering crazy beat and endless repetition and many, many electronic/dance albums have tracks that lean into D&B with great success. Take the style to the extreme and you have Pendulum's super heavy "hold Your Colour" or any of Amon Tobin's incredible, radical albums, of which I have several.

So one day, I'm in Dada Records in Perth searching for a new electronic/dance/IDM - 'something' album to try out and came across this one. I'd heard of the name Squarepusher but did not know he was crazy D&B, - 'till I got home and played it. What a shock! Couldn't even finish it and was furious with myself for wasting my hard-earned. Eventually calmed down and determined that having made my bed I should lie in it.

There's the beauty of buying physical media, the sheer expense compels you to do this. If I had streamed the album it wouldn't have soiled my system for more than the first track but the investment made made sure I gave it a chance. Second and even third play didn't do it but I did get an inkling that there was something in there that could be appreciated. The penny dropped probably next play, there was fun, power and music!!! hiding in the 45000 bpm and savage bass drops. I amazed myself to be honest and so glad I did. Got to be in the right mood though and play it loud. Hell! to think, the night before I was playing Joan Baez "The First Ten Years" FFS.
