Wilson WAMM installation album

Recommended Posts

Check out this (facebook) album that Wilson Audio posted showing an installation of a pair of WAMMs, a pair of Thor's hammers, D'Agostino Relentless monoblocks, DCS Vivaldi, Clearaudio Statement turntable, TT1M1 linear tracking arm and Goldfinger cartridge. This system would cost around $2 million USD.

Maybe if I were a billionaire I'd think nothing of the cost of such a system and buy one, but realistically, at that price I can afford to personally contract out the Melbourne (or Sydney) symphony for my own private performances...

Can anyone imagine being a dinky di audiophile, put two million dollars worth of gear in a room and have no room treatment whatsoever? Turns out I'm not the only one thinking this. The top comment says the same. What a waste of good equipment.

The room looks big enough to me.  I hope the person loves the sound.  He listens in the lap of luxury.  Not my kinda room, too fancy for me.

The look of the rooms of all the fancy systems I see don't look like my kinda room.   I guess that means I will never have a fancy system :D

C'mon, Peter - I would class yours as a 'fancy system'  (as well as a great-sounding one!).  :thumb:

Anyone here who went to the Hifi show in Melb when a pair of D’Agostino Momentum, a pair of Wilson Sasha,  DCS 4 stack  about $400k of equipment in the room.....   I’ve heard a lot of criticism while I was in the room, but playing certain tracks that I requested, simply stunning!

I can just imagine what this system does regardless of what room it’s in, because when I heard that setup in Melbourne,  there were no room treatment and the size was smaller.

Thats at a show bro. Speakers like that need room to breathe. Can't even use the one third rule in that room. I like to look and listen and with the back wall so close, holography passes away.

@Wimbo

they played homeless and diamond on the sole of her shoes from Paul Simon Graceland album.  That sets me up to pinpoint exactly where all the voices were and where they were standing

They played Diana kralls temptation.  Finally I requested them to play the 1st track from this:

https://www.amazon.com/Sound-China-Zhao-Cong/dp/B0083WK0HK

and someone from the audience wanted a copy!

Holographic.....you asked.  You had to be there!

It’s the same with the TAD room with Andrew Jones....

Damn, imagine how good it would of sounded in a bigger room! ☺️ When I said "Thats at a show" it was relative to the critics in the room. I'm not saying it sounded bad, as you rightly said I wasnt there. Just that speakers like that need more room.

It can only get better, I do agree the bigger the room the better the sound stage.....

and then I walked into a meeting room with German Physiks....?   Now these can sound good in the toilet!

" Now these can sound good in the toilet! "   What an advertising slogan!  You should copyright it and get royalties.

I can imagine the competitors promoting German Physiks speakers, too:  "Go ahead.  Stick 'em in the toilet."

Anyone who have met Con Lucas from Telos  demoing there top shelf speakers had a great laugh that day.  Can’t remember the name of those expensive huge monstrosity that was German Made,  Con said quote and jokes aside, when someone asked why don’t they put these on, after all they sounded superb at a hall somewhere east of melb around Burwood.

Cons words were; “ oh no we can’t play them here, the room doesn’t do it justice, they sound Schitt here”.

Now fancy carting these huge transducers that weigh  a tonne, place them in a Hotel meeting room thats the size of a small townhouse, hooking them up to $xxx.000 of Electronics, only to discover they don’t  suit the room!

Then he went on to say “ Here will put the German Physiks on “. His 2 helpers moved these Transducers that’s shaped like they’re from Doctor Who series into position,  when they get it where  they thought was the best position and turned around to get Con’s approval, Con looks and comments “Oh don’t worry about it, they will sound good anywhere, even in the dunny....”. ?

One of those best ever moments for me for HIFI.  If you ever go to a Hifi show make sure you checkout a demo with Con and Mark if theyre there.  They have some of the best engineered gear around producing some seriously addictive sound.

Every room is different, placing the speakers away from the front and side wall is just the starting point.

I for one had to move the speakers closer to the back wall as that’s the way I enjoyed the bass while sacrificing a little of that holographic sound.

Reviewers always do near field listening of huge floorstanders as they want to listen to the speaker not the room.

Not a very good reviewer if that is their only criteria.

Yes.

"Room treatment" is very strongly dependant on the angles and distances between things... and the directivity pattern of the speakers.     In small, poorly laid out rooms .... you "have a problem" almost by default (and so almost need "treatment" by default).

Here.  It appears that surfaces are far enough away from everything to not pose a problem.

The sound waves are the same size, no matter whether the speaker producing them is shoebox sized, or if the speaker is bigger than a large refrigerator.

How much room a "speaker needs to breathe" isn't related to its size.....  Assuming that's what you mean by speakers "like that".   :)

I think the biggest issue that most people run into.... is how close they sit to the wall behind them.    Unfortunately we can't see that in the pictures of this setup.

Maybe, very popular though.

It kinda makes sense especially when these guys review Uber expensive speakers every week. It’s the only way you can report to some accuracy what the speakers sound like in their setup.

True as boundary interference comes into play.

I for one don’t have this issue as I sit closer to the front wall and the back wall is about 75% of the length away as it houses our dining area.

We have an open plan living room.

I've got 2.4 metres behind me than can be changed to five. Wall behind speakers is 3.5 metres. When playing vinyl, I'm invited into the soundstage. This is the type of distances these speakers need. Ohh, speakers are bookshelves on stands, ala below.
