Linn Sondek Mose + Hercules Power Supply

Recommended Posts

Thank you Peter, You are right, so much things to do few days before the Lunar New Year and even more things to do during the first few days of the Lunar New Year and repeat every Year.  If you are in my place, you know everything shut down these few days.

Good news is new Mose/Hercules 2019  will be available very soon.

I will resume working soon.

Cheers!

I don’t have any 45s so I don’t miss it.

If you like vinyl, Tim, you should start acquiring them.

LPs @ 45 sound waaay better than LPs @ 33!  :)  (Why do I think this ... well, for a start, I have a single-track LP which has the same recording - on one side cut at 33 and on the other side, at 45.  You can easily hear the difference.)

Until you order that 180 gram album remaster you've been chasing for yonks and just after you've opened the LP mailer and carefully opened the gatefold cover and chucked the first side on after you've run it through your RCM and you sit back in the sweet spot with coffee/wine/beer in hand and...WTF!!!!? ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, MY TT HAS ...umm, gone slow...what is wrong?

Welcome to the world of the cunningly disguised record that you really really really want and the re-issuers have naturally assumed you will want to hear it in the best format they can think of that you might have.

I waited for two years after I ordered my fav Radiohead album and chucked it on the Linn and I had my wtf moment. Never again. I looked at the Moses Hercules and plumbed for the Mober(also from Edmund) and if you want the difference explained then ask @andyr  about the differences between AC and DC motors.

The Mober is in another league I reckon to the Moses H.

haha - I stated collecting 45s about 5 years before I bought a Lingo!   (I just knew I would have one, at some stage.)

Re. the difference between AC & DC motors ... weeell, I belong to a different sect, Luc.  A synchronous AC motor driven by the 'Number9' speed controller is the pinnacle of tt motor science, IMO.  :P

It may well be - but the Moses H is only on a par with the Lingo.  :)

Sorry to hijack this thread but I thought 45s may have more detail but were noiser than 33s?

That was one reason I was happy to stick with the 33s, as well as not having to get up and change sides more regularly.

Hi Andy

I have an Origin Live DC100 to play with and do my own AC vs DC comparison, but would be interested to know a little bit more about your experiences with the Number 9 and if you used it with the original Linn motor and which DC motor you compared it to.

Cheers

Sorry Grant, have not used it with a Linn 110v Premotec - as I have a prototype, which could only drive the 24v Premotec (that Rega use).  The Production model - just released - has output modules for a number of different motors, including the Linn Premotec.

And I have not done an A/B on my deck with a DC motor ... because (and this is why I said to Luc that I belonged to the 'AC sect') I think the nature of a DC motor means that it has problems with maintaining an accurate speed - hence DC motor controllers get increasingly complicated, in order to do a good job with this.  The Linn Radikal seems to have got this sorted ... but at a huge price.  (I would lurve to hear an A/B between 2 identical-apart-from-motors LP12s ... one with a Radikal and the other with a Number 9.  But this is unlikely to ever happen.  :( )

Mober tech wise looks pretty solid to me. Good maxxon motor with speed controller that uses optical scanning for speed accuracy and adjust speed real time. As long as it uses a good clock and it uses fast fpga it should be really good. Compared to offering from company like origin live it should be above it in performance

But Armageddon only gives you 33 1/3rd rpm!  :(

Andy

At 50hz 240v......bump it up to 67.5hz..( i think ) for 45 rpm and your in business....:P:thumb:

....and IMO its the second best PS after the Radikal...

Tase.

Yep, the number 7 (or was that 9?) is on my list when funds allow. The geddon is an improvement on my 30 year old Valhalla in the meantime.

Sure, Tase ... but how do you do this?  (Increase the Hz to 67.5)  Without a motor speed controller that outputs AC Hz, that is?

Very interesting concept, Tase.

Reading the specs - it seems to be a device designed for 60Hz/120v US power.  So how do you plug it into Oz mains?

Excellent solution for someone who already has an Armageddon, Tase! :thumb: (So you can run at 45rpm, as well as 33.)

But for someone who doesn't already have a 'Geddon' ... I suspect the price of a Geddon + PS Audio P300 > the price of a 'Number 9'.
