blybo Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Hi Guy's, About a week ago our Apple TV (model before the 4k one) in the familyroom starting constantly buffering or reducing image quality when streaming Netflix or youtube. I installed a speed test app and we are getting 0.2mbps on download, 17ms ping. All other devices in the home are fine and my phone whilst on the wifif network is seeing 12-14mbps. I've reset it, I've unplugged power, and so far no joy. I'm on an overnight business trip so unplugged it before I left. If not fixed by this evening does anybody have any other suggestions before heading off to Apple?
bzr Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 I had this problem with the "1" or "2' model years ago. For the money a new one fixed it. Haven't used apple tv in years since
BATMAQN Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Sounds like the modem in it is on the way out would be good if you try it via Ethernet see if that improves the speed it would also help to diagnose if it is the modem or not, Apple may replace it with a refurbished one even if it is out of warranty they are pretty good if you go into the store and show them be polite, for all the bagging out that Apple gets on this site I’ve found them to be pretty good to deal with.
betty boop Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 std it solution... switch off and unplug modem from the wall. leave switched off for 10 min. plug everything back in let all devices find their ways back on the network and then check it can be a network IP conflict ... one thing have noted wiht apple devices and some modems especially if apple iPhone iPad.... watch etc if you leave house come back in it assigns a new ip address and they keep doing that but they can only handle so many devices and dont forget the old ones. was case with an older optus adsl modem. meant increasing number of devices it could handle. not seen this issue with newer modems. surely be on nbn soon ? in which case get a new modem in anycase. 1

This is what I was worried about, the Billion can only handle 16 devices. So I have work issued Lenovo laptop, iPhone, iPad and personnel MacBook Pro, the boss; iPad iPhone, the Daughter: iPod iPhone MBP, the son; iPhone, iPad, MBP, the. There 3 TV, Apple TV etc....... list goes on...... if all fails do a restart start and try moving the Apple TV device closer to the wifi modem as other wifi in the area can interfere (it’s who has the strongest wifi signal) hence the reason I updated the modem to the latest Orbi dual mesh device. 1
blybo Posted February 6, 2019 Author Posted February 6, 2019 Good news, plugged the ATV back in after having a 48 hour rest whilst I was away and all good to go. Back up to 15mbps download, so got a good fix of youtube viewing last night. 2

This gives a cleaner/quieter Ethernet signal for Roon streaming from our iMac in the next room. AS the ATV works fine via WiFi most of the time, it means I don't need to install an Ethernet switch in the livingroom. Edited February 11, 2019 by blybo
groovem Posted March 22, 2019 Posted March 22, 2019 The other trouble with ethernet is that you can't use your iPhone or iPad to control the Apple TV.

groovem Posted March 24, 2019 Posted March 24, 2019 You can only use the AppleTV app on your iPhone when the Apple TV is connected to WiFi. You can use the app on your phone or iPad rather than use the Apple TV remote control. Both have to be on the same WiFi network.

My 4K ATV in the HT room is ethernet hard wired but I have still occasionally used the app to enter login details rather than use the on screen keyboard
groovem Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 It is true. I had my Apple TV connected via ethernet and I had to change to WiFi to use the app on my iPhone.

I suspect that this may be some kind of IP conflict/network issue as like Bylbo, I can also confirm mine can also be controlled via the phone/tablet and is wired via ethernet.

Buffle Posted March 30, 2019 Posted March 30, 2019 I’ve been having trouble with the ATVs in our home, too. One is version 4 and the other 4K. Both were connected over 5.8 GHz with strong signal and internet speed around 45 mbps. I tried setting static IPs and that didn’t seem to fix it, and not did prioritisation using QoS. I haven’t had time to look further into it but for now have resolved the issue by switching over to 2.4 GHz. At some point I’ll look further into it.

Then https://www.speedtest.net/apps/appletv QoS is likely something you don't want to enable, unless you frequently run applications that when done simultaneously max out your internet download or upload capacity.

Hadn’t gotten around to running a speed test from the ATV itself, although at some stage I will. In regard to QoS, I do for work. Lots of VPN work with reasonably high bw. 1
