cafe67 Posted February 4, 2019 Posted February 4, 2019 Sign o the times ? “78records has announced it will close it's doors after forty seven years, 78 Records will cease trading as of 3rd March 2019. This decision is due to the current economic and retail climate, and a substantial increase in streaming services at the expense of physical product. We thank all our customers, past and present, for their patronage; indeed we have enjoyed those 47 years of commitment and devotion to the cause of music. It has been a pleasure to have played a considerable and significant part in the WA music retail industry since 1971. “Keep the faith people!” Andrew “Fang” de Lang”
Batty Posted February 4, 2019 Posted February 4, 2019 I'll be in Perth next week, will have to pop in, got the address?
JukKluk2 Posted February 4, 2019 Posted February 4, 2019 Many fond memories of 78's. Forty something years ago it was a weekly point of pilgrimage to see what was new and wonderful in music. Originally upstairs in Forrest Place it was their second premises adjacent Her Majesty's Theatre that lives long in my memory. Thanks guys.

wolster Posted February 4, 2019 Posted February 4, 2019 Used to love treading the wood floors when they were in Hay Street. Rack after rack of CDs to thumb through and a vinyl section that gradually crept into taking more space as the medium grew in popularity.
Batty Posted February 4, 2019 Posted February 4, 2019 Any other recommendations to visit? I have a week, staying near the Mint.
cafe67 Posted February 5, 2019 Author Posted February 5, 2019 Dada records on pier st will be close to you.
williac Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 I will miss the nostalgia of going into their store near his Majestys theatre and spend an hour or so after school rummaging through the vinyl.....then taking the trip across the street to Vince Ross Audio World. Without a doubt it was this weekly ritual where i developed my love of all things music and music reproduction. I also liked their two story place when they moved up the road, but eventually it became nothing more than a $10 cd shop and lost its magic. Even worse was the decision to move to their current location down an alley off the Murray st mall with poor to zero exposure and foot traffic. Agree with Fodders that the current shop deteriorated to nothing more than a second hand LP joint and was not worth the risk of being stabbed or mugged trying to get into the place down that dodgy alley. That leaves Dadas in Pier St as the best place for vinyl in my opinion - very interesting place.....I hope they are able to survive if and when the Vinyl resurgence wanes......
williac Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Interestingly I ran into one of the owners of the building (who also bought the 78s business) they currently reside in about a year ago and they had big plans to turn the place into an intimate live music venue with food and booze, as they do have an outside courtyard - while continue to trade in second hand vinyl. Clearly that never eventuated.
betocool Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Too bad! But I kinda saw it coming I guess. 78 Records changed owners a few years ago, say 2 or 3? I've been in Perth for about 5 already, I remember I used to go there regularly when they had CD's, records, and you could also order. Then, all of a sudden, this guy comes in, bought off some radio and got thousands of records to sell off. At that time the previous owner was gone. It also seemed as if the new owner had little idea what he was getting into. I never went back, sadly. Dada's is a good place in the city. If you go around Leederville, there's Urban Records and there's Rhubarb Records (they also sell the most incredible Bagel Burger, and they have a tattoo parlour). There's Noise Pollution records in Northbridge, and the shop on Hay St which mixes Comics and records, just can't recall the name right now. Rhubarb Records has another trading place in East Perth, but I would have to ask the guy where it is, as I've never been there. That kind of sums it up for me I guess. Cheers, Alberto 1
Pieface Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 Another landmark of my youth disappearing. 78's, Dada's, Tactix, Joynt Venture (sorry Mum) all important stops whenever a lad found himself in the city

Though I haven't been in there since the long running 50% off new vinyl sale ended a while back (still have half a crate of sealed stuff from that!). Haven't been into 78s for at least 4 years, it was still new vinyl and CDs and next to none second hand at that point. I've always been a Dada's guy, that "Fang" guy rubbed me the wrong way so many ways over decades. Last time was record store day 2014 and a couple of 13-14 year old girls came in and asked if they had the RSD One Direction release. He puffed up and loudly said "No, and I wouldn't stock it on principle!", his mates chuckle and the girls shrivel up and exit the store. I left as well, and think that might have been the last time.
cafe67 Posted February 5, 2019 Author Posted February 5, 2019 Diabolik books and records on Scarborough beach road mt hawthorn (across from mt hawthorn shopping centre) also have a very good and wide range of records. (No cds)
glenm64 Posted February 5, 2019 Posted February 5, 2019 If in Freo also try these. The Record Finder, theres actually 2 stores both the same side on High St.Theres also The Record Cellar, corner of Suffolk St and South Terrace near the markets. Its only open 10.30am - 3.30pm.
RickSL Posted February 6, 2019 Posted February 6, 2019 Going in to 78s when it was next to His Majesty’s was pretty formative for me. So much obscure vinyl, in a dusty dark room with creaky floorboards. Later locations were too bright and sunny. For vinyl now in Perth, you can’t go past Safari’s in Northbridge. Prices are always beyond fair.
mondie Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 Bought quite a few records and have some good memories of this shop going back to the 90's. Sounds like the store was bought by someone who didn't know have the knowledge to make a success of it and which had little to do with streaming. Still own a great Jarrah CD rack that was made by a staff member who was selling a range of them through the store, I had to arrange for a removalist doing a run from Perth - Melb to deliver it for me, that would have been '97.
bzr Posted February 8, 2019 Posted February 8, 2019 bought my first cd's from the Hay St. store. Did a few laps around joynt venture too....
