I found that vintage TT in good condition can provide great performance (not cheapo modern plastic toys) I have tried quite a few vintage budget TT with budget cart and it never damage my LPs. Certainly higher quality TT and tonearm with expensive cart provide more accuracy and transparency and better in every possible way. I would be more worried about worn out cart with improperly setup tonearm and cartridge which would damage LP and ears... If I chase the best bang for the buck then I fully agree with you....
