powerav Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 Might be a good idea to start one of these so we can get some ideas and tips, mine I believe is a pretty simple one, nowhere near as expansive as a control 4 or similar system but much cheaper using Google Home as the main controller either by voice or phones/tablets, biggest improvement for everything was to install a rack with 24 port switch and network cables to every room. This takes the load off the wifi so the wifi devices work better. Biggest negative we found was last night when we had a brown out at 1am, everything beeps and buzzes for a minute while it’s all reconnecting.Photos with descriptions. The network rack built into wall in garage.Yes messy cabling but there is a patch panel, 24 port netgear switch, modem, Poe devices for cameras, old onkyo amp with google audiocast for garage audio. The 12 TB NAS and a google mini for commands when entering house.A jbl link view that works with google in kitchen, wife uses for her appointments and the kids can video call us by voice command, great speakers for audio as well.Wifi light switch that works manually or by voice command to turn on kitchen, dining or lounge lights. Commands such as goodnight will turn all lights off, good morning will turn on kitchen or I’m home will turn in kitchen and dining.A google home for voice commands and when added in a group with jbl link view gives pretty decent room filling audio.Google home pod in bedroom, links with google chrome cast for bedroom tv.Onkyo 2.1 receiver with google chrome cast built in for outdoor audio and TV.Tablet mounted to wall for camera system, music, weather, time, power and solar production etc. 7

Kaynin Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 What's the voice control like on the Google Home? I've never used it but wonder if it's buggy. Does it work the same for everyone's voice within the family?
powerav Posted January 28, 2019 Author Posted January 28, 2019 Do you mean off? Or night lights on?Yes sorry OFF, trying to type all this up on phone.

The wife will always stuff it up as she will say “ok google turn on living light” instead of lights. 1
Guest Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 Would have loved to add to this thread, but we're in mid-renovations/extension and it's all being redone. I'd love to share my system once it's all complete! 3
powerav Posted January 28, 2019 Author Posted January 28, 2019 I think the best automation in our house are just these simple motion sensors for lights in areas where you just either walk through or in and out such as halls, entrances, walk in pantries. So much easier and practical than saying a command. 2
Hi-Fi Whipped Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Google in the bedroom, in my house that would mean a very long drought! The wife is convinced they are listening.... always listening, and I don’t have the knowledge to tell her otherwise!

powerav Posted January 30, 2019 Author Posted January 30, 2019 Worst still is they reckon the ones with the cameras in them are watching you.
glenm64 Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 If I automated my house the wife would be out of a job.
