I know hd dvd players and discs never took off. But i am considering getting one with a bunch of discs.

Has anyone had any experience with these?

When i was a teenager i bought a sega saturn and it became a flop.. now they are worth more than the newest xbox.. probably 3 times more. I wonder if that will happen with hd dvd

The value of hd dvd hardware has steadily declined since bluray won the war . That doesn't mean the format though isn't still superior to standard dvd .. I still have a collection with mostly dolby digital plus soundtracks as well as some dolby truehd ones :)

To save my discs I converted all mine to lossless files and put them on a NAS; some discs have been known to get whats called disc rot - from WBros ;) Was lucky enough to pick up a HD E1 and XA2 for a song when the discs were very cheap ; the XA2 could bitstream the lossless codecs being the top of the line ; the E1 decoded everything to lpcm iirc..

What do you use top play though?

I have a laptop sata hddvd drive, and I converted one to a blu ray, but you loose the menus etc. It would be nice to have a non PC based solution to play them. Or a proper way to convert.

My trusty  TVIX 3D S2 but theres plenty of dunes etc that you can try :) I like shrinking the files so I converted the dd+ ones to m2ts [ no chapters ] but for some reason used makemkv for all the dolby truehd ones [dvdfab never oficially covered hddvd]  . Those ones retained their chapters as they are just in a mkv container ?

Yeah I think the one I did was DD not trueHD. Just wish I had the menu structure. Not worth buying another standalone player for one title though!!! :)
