Hello,

I've been looking to upgrade from my current sub (a Paradigm Sub SE) to a pair of subwoofers. Finding a second Paradigm SE sub has proved difficult and while I've found pairs of other subs on Gumtree and the like, encouraging the sellers to pack and post to Perth has been difficult.

The Paradigm SE has a 10" driver, is sealed and a 300w RMS amp. I have a Martin Logan Motion series speakers and a NAD T775 AV receiver.

My budget is around $900.

So while looking at the SVS SB1000, came across the Emotiva BASX S8 8" subs. The Emotiva subs are ported and have a 150w RMS amp in them.

I can get two Emotiva 8" subs for a bit under the price of a single SB1000 at the moment so I'm wondering if anyone would recommend this as an option?

Would the two smaller subs compensate for one larger sub? I'm hoping I can get a better overall sound with two subs rather than one...

Are there any other subs worth considering in this price range?

Cheers,

Chris

Two subs if well placed can help to even out peaks and dips in the bass.

I couldnt find any specs on the emotiva subs but they are probably not as good as the svs. I think in that case you would be better off with the svs as you could add another one in the future if you wanted or needed to. There are quite a few good subs I think having a listen if you can and check the reviews ,

I just bought a svs sb2000 based on reviews, hasnt arrived yet but Im sure I wont be dissappointed.

Is this for music or HT?

I assuming HT with an AV receiver.

Yes, I was thinking that I could add another SVS later although the Emotiva isn't too bad (especially for $400 each).

The specs are:

Electrical Specifications

Amplifier type: High efficiency Class D.

Amplifier power: 150 Watts RMS

Frequency response: 28 Hz - 200 Hz (+0/-3 dB).

Inputs: LFE or summed left and right; unbalanced.

Controls: Crossover, Phase, Volume

Yes ? While mainly movies, I prefer subtle bass with music.

Ok, so I am far from a sub guru but these are my thoughts.

I have 2x SB1000 subs and I bought them primarily for music. Generally the consensus is if the subs are for music then sealed are the way to go. The SB1000's are a great sub for the money I think. Keep in mind the frequency response is better on the SVS v the Emotiva and double the RMS power. Probably why the Emotiva are so cheap.

What do you plan to do with your Paradigm SE sub? The specs pretty much match the SB 1000. Are you unhappy with the performance? I would be mindful of going out and buying a sub that may or may not be a huge improvement. Have you optimised the Paradigm SE and squeezed every bit of performance out of it? Possibly you are better off trying to optimise your Paradigm SE than spending money. I found this link to be very helpful when I was trying to integrate my subs.

If however you actually want something for movies I would be tempted to audition this

I forgot to mention why not put up a WTB thread for a matching Paradigm SE and see what turns up. Not sure that I would trust Gumtree for shipping items as it is supposed to be for face to face transactions

Thanks Darknark for the replies - I have spent some time tinkering with the Paradigm. If I could get another then I'd stick with it. Will try a WTB post.

The article is interesting, some interesting ideas - I'll have another crack at setting up the sub. I'm possibly stuffed as the room is an L shape with a recess on one side and windows/doorways which no doubt play havoc with the room acoustics.

Will ponder it some more...

With a difficult room like that Ide go twin subs to smooth out any peaks/nulls and standing waves generated blahblah:)

Heres a good reference as to how two smaller driver subs can get pretty close to a single large when pushing good spl levels https://www.audioholics.com/subwoofer-setup/two-subs

Note the much smoother freq response . How big is the room ? The paradigm with a twin [ if its large] sounds good

I've attached a dodgy sketch of the room (combined lounge/dining) - red squares/rectangles are seating. You can see its a complex shape and has a corner window and 2m x 1m alcove on the left. The back wall (behind the main listening location) does curve as I've drawn on the left hand side! Plus bamboo flooring - some room treatments might be required.

Green square is current sub location which is a good position - after a complete setup from scratch. I think a secondary position would be to the left of the front right speaker (red "X"). But I'm open to suggestions! Maybe to the right of the main listen position? Or I might try the old "run the sub from the main listening position" trick and crawl around the room finding the spot with the best sounding bass...

I've settled on getting a pair of Martin Logan Dynamo 700Ws.

https://www.martinlogan.com/uploads/documents/brochures/brochure_dynamo_700w.pdf

I've bought one s/h (waiting for it to arrive) and will buy another once I've sold the Paradigm Sub SE. Unless it's a good mixed combo. Yes, the specs (24-200 +/- 3dB) are pretty close to the Paradigm (but the ML sub has wireless which will, (assuming I've got power near by) make it easier to place the subs in better but more 'remote' positions without signal cables. Like the Paradigm the MK subs can be converted to front firing.

So the Paradigm is up for sale - it's in very good working/unmarked cosmetic condition and comes with manual/power cable original box...

For some reason your jpeg doesn't come up on my browser blahblah so can only suggest a general idea for a non rectangular room with opposing corner placement [if feasible] as laid out here ..  https://www.aperionaudio.com/blogs/aperion-audio-blog/dual-subwoofer-placement-for-your-home

The bass reinforcement of nearby walls can help with a large room needless to say :)

Thanks cwt, I've had a read and will see how I get on.

The pic (now a jpg) should load. Nice sketch hey? ?1559703140_LoungeRoom.thumb.jpg.85292161ad9878a96e1aedd09da97920.jpg

I've bought two s/h Martin Logan Dynamo 700Ws so will experiment when they arrive. The wireless connectivity will help with placement flexibility and by all accounts works very well.

The 700W has similar specs to the Paradigm - (24-200 +/- 3dB) sealed enclosure and front/down firing convertible.

Ide like your front placement suggestion blahblah as its equidistant from the mlp which means potentially no futzing with phase [ if the dynamo's have variable phase ? ]  https://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/home-audio-subwoofers/55710-dual-subs-positioning-phase-question.html#post503859

The void behind the sub if placed diametrically opposite down the back would rule that idea out [ one sub would have wall reinforcement ;not both ]
