KEF 104ab Reference, a good buy?

Recommended Posts

I have a chance to purchase a pair of KEF 104ab Reference speakers from the late 70s for around $250, is this a good price and are they much cop? They are of the same era as the Gale 401 and were about the same price back then.

The 104ab is voiced beautifully and is an excellent speaker, and if in good condition is a good buy at $250. It is not in the league of the Gale 401A which has killer bass, but at a quarter of the going price the Kef more than competes.

Speakers are very much a personal choice, so anything anyone says about a pair of speakers, re. sound quality is tainted. That said, if the speakers are in good nick, $250.00 seems like good value to me. The KEFs and the Gales cannot be remotely compared. The Gales are a significantly superior speaker, IMO.

OK, went for a listen and only the woofers were working :(

Pulled the fuses for the tweeters both blown, kept my mouth shut.

Got them for $100.

Just swapped fuses, all good now, what a gamble, but at $100 why not.

Now all I need is a British amp from the mid to late 70s to go with these and the LP12.

Do it now

i am cooking atm or i would ?

I owned both these and the Gale's as well and can verify the Gales's were better but those Kefs were also very good, had really good low bass, for the size.
