Oppo 103 transport

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm interested in using my Oppo 103 as a cd transport to a Topping D30 or D50, I'm interested in your opinions of wether it's a worthwhile upgrade and if I would hear any notable difference compared to the DAC in the 103.

It's going into a Schiit Valhalla 2 and HD650 headphones.

Thanks in advance,

The103 has a so, so DAC.  Have not heard the Topping DACs but from what I have read here, they are very good value for money DACs. So, you will likely hear the improvement.
Thanks Snoopy you always reply first whenever I have posted, I really appreciate it.
Are there any dacs around the $350 mark that you would suggest?

Just a nice coincidence, but happy to help! ?

There are many Topping fans here, so I will let them tell you.

Best value for money is going second hand, so be patient and look in Classifieds.

If new and want portability as well, suggest auditioning Audioquest Dragonfly Red.

I think @Snoopy8 is being kind by describing the 103 DAC as so-so, I have a 105 and I would describe it's DAC performance as less than so-so, it just has no weight in the sound. I'm not sure if it's the DAC implementation itself or something else such as the power supply or output stage?

Anyway, I have a few DACs that I play around with including the Topping D50 which is amazing value for money in my opinion and well worth a try. I also have a Chord Qutest and the Topping does a pretty good job against it, with the bass being a little loose in comparison to the Chord. Of course this would be system/setup dependent.
