Following on from my theme last week of "Two Magnificent Turntables" which generated a fair bit of interest, I now present to you in the digital domain "Two Magnificent CD-SACD Players". These are favourites in a lifetime of collecting and trying out various methods of digital replay. Firstly, the 12kg Sansui CDX-711 CD player is a beauty, it is luxurious to use and sonically superb. I bought this player brand NEW from Japan Hi-Fi in Victoria Park, Perth (now gone) during an era when that shop sold new Yamaha NS-1000M and NS-1200 loudspeakers (I bought those too later). The Sansui player was bloody expensive in those days and retailed for about $2,000. It is beautifully made in piano gloss with a slick Sony transport mechanism, luxurious controls and functions.

This is what Hi-Fi Chioce Magazine UK said about the Sansui CDX-711 "Excellent Lab Result: Very Good Sound Rating ...Luxury features, finish and sound from this Classy Sansui; no excuses required here."  Anyway, I have always been very impressed using this player from time to time (its been in storage a lot due to tail chasing), I've owned Accuphases, Meridian, Naim etc and not sure any of them are better than the Sansui. Every time I pull it out of storage, it makes me think that I am just chasing my tail with those other fancy players.

At an earlier stage, I did give the Sansui player to Pat O'Brien at WAR Audio here in Perth to weave his magic over it. I do recall spending about $500 with him to install a G&D Transforms USA oscillator/clock mod, a new higher quality power cord and sounding deadening of the chassis and critical capacitors with Blackhole pad material. By the way, there are two sets of RCA outputs at the back, one is for the G&D output and the other is a direct connection to the original Sansui circuit. If you use the latter, you are hearing the Sansui as it left the factory. I like this set-up because it means the CDX-711 is basically untouched and can be used either way, that is, not interfered with, if you want it that way. The Sansui is in good working order and comes with two remote controls, User Manual and the original brochure. This is the CD player that matches the top of the line Sansui CDX-911DG integrated amplifier at the time.

The second player on offer is truly magnificent, the Sony SCD-777ES SACD player. Made to jewellery standards from beautifully machined big slabs of alluminium - it weighs an astonishing back breaking 28kg or 61.79 lbs ...they certainly do not make them like this anymore. Soundwise the Sony is superb on SACD, if less so but still excellent with CDs. Seeing that Sony invented the Super Audio format, you would expect it to be good with SACD discs and it is my honest opinion that with SACD it is the equal of the $13K Accuphase DP-77 SACD player that I once loved and owned. Detail retrieval and naturalness on the Sony are of the highest order with well recorded SACDs. These big Sony's are reputed to be a bit cranky straight out of the box even new, when locking on to the disc format. Alas, mine is no different. It locks on and plays SACDs every time basically, but when it comes to CDs it is a bit cantankerous especially with DIY burnt CDs. This has not bothered me as I mainly use the Sony SCD-777ES as a superb standalone SACD player.

A few of the photos near the end showing the players side by side, displays that both players are locking on to and playing the respective CD and SACD formats properly. The Solid Tech 'Feet of Silence' and the Still Point supports are not included, but can be had by negotiation.

Anyone in Perth interested in these players is welcome to audition them in my home and I am also willing to ship Australia wide, at cost. I have the original factory boxes, remote and manual for the Sony SCD-777ES player.

Cheers,

Steve.

The Sony unit is SOLD, thank you all for your interest and good words.

The Sansui CDX-711 CD player is still available and the price is somewhat negotiable? To be brutally honest the Sansui is a better Redbook player as it sounds detailed, sophisticated and locked-in thru' the midrange and lower treble ...a bit like the TDA1541 and r2r DACs that I seem to like. If the Sansui doesn't go, I won't be sad .  :thumb:B)
