Dave's Addiction Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 (edited) Hi, Just wondering if the i66's will be OK in a room 3.4x5m with 9ft ceilings (Assuming I can place the speakers without WAF restraints). Or is this likely to be sub-optimal? I'm particularly worried about the bass response in a small room. Cheers Dave Edited May 30, 2018 by Dave's Addiction added bass concern 1
Upgrayed Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 I have theses in a room of similar size and they work fine, but work better in larger rooms I have found. If you are considering purchase Vaf are very helpful with their advice. 1

If you don't mind me asking, how large is your room and how is the bass response?
Upgrayed Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 4 x 4.5 Bass is deep and powerful, sound stage not as good as larger room. In process of building much larger room in a modern house. That said I could certainly live with what I have now.

VAF Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 Hi Dave, I did a quick model of the room with a standard room placement but if you could tell me where you're planning on placing the speakers I can be more accurate. Maybe email to me at simon.wilde@vaf.com.au. The model shows a rise in bass at around 35Hz and a second smaller around 70Hz - this is placement dependant of course and typical of that size room regardless of the speakers used. But in response to your question, the I-66 is very room forgiving and you should expect a good mid and top end - Unless your room is tiled, with full height glass windows and no soft furnishings... in which case buy some headphones! I joke, seriously though room acoustics are important and your question is a valid one. Which is why we developed speakers with controlled dispersion and further, products like the Soundwall, we also deal with other room acoustic products so we're always happy to help no matter what the room acoustics are like. Very happy to have a chat if you'd like to call. (08) 8363 9996. Cheers for now, Simon 8
rantan Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 What a great response ( as usual ) from VAF. There are only an elite few speaker makers that routinely go out of their way to help customers and VAF always leads the way. I would love some I66 myself but I have nowhere to put them. 3
DBM Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 As said above, contact Simon and he will look after you, customer service is excellent, as are the i66's. 1
Stump Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 No problem with your room side.I had 5X I66 surround system same width just bit longer room. Now have the I93s and still sound great. Stump 1
Guest Peter the Greek Posted May 30, 2018 Posted May 30, 2018 I've had them in a room that size, to get the best of imaging/sound stage etc you'll need to put them in a less than ideal spot (for bass), meaning you'll want a sub Given you'll probably be placing them near the walls due to limited width relative to length, you'll likely need an acoustic panel right next to them to deal with unwanted SBIR issues. Other than that, a most fine speaker for a single row of seats/seat in a room that size

Peta Posted July 20, 2018 Posted July 20, 2018 Mine are good in a room a little larger. 7x4.5x4m. I use a couple of subwoofers to take the load off the bass drivers and allow also for them to be used with movies. I use bass traps in the corners behind and also acoustic panels in front and behind for mid-range resonance absorption. I find that having internal window coverings closed helps. 2
Dave's Addiction Posted July 20, 2018 Author Posted July 20, 2018 That sounds like an excellent sized room for them. For two channel I prefer them without subs but I do have dual subs which are used for movies. The room they are in now is larger than the one quoted in the original question, and similar to yours except for a much lower ceiling height than you have!

Dave's Addiction Posted July 21, 2018 Author Posted July 21, 2018 (edited) With the original question I was looking to separate movies and music into two locations. It seemed to make sense to keep the movie side of things in the bigger room as this is where we have friends over to entertain/watch etc, but moving the i66's into the smaller room looks like a definite no go So it looks like I'll be keeping both systems combined for now. On the upside now it's time to save to upgrade them to actives!! Edited July 21, 2018 by Dave's Addiction 1
Peta Posted July 21, 2018 Posted July 21, 2018 The active option looks good. Music benefits from the bigger room, in my view. The Actives with DEXQ have a definite edge in room correction but still less correction needed cannot be a bad thing. 1

Hi Peta, you'll be glad to know we're about to release the 66 in an active format. I know you've been waiting for a while on these. Parts are being ordered in and we'll be in touch as soon as the final parts are ready to 'roll'. Will be in touch soon. Cheers for now Simon 2
