Hi Everyone

In the next 6-9 weeks I will be releasing Holton Audio's first pre-amplifier.

It will be the first of three pre-amps that I am planning for 2018.

It will be a fully balanced high bandwidth ultra low THD+N topology preamp capable of accepting XLR as well as RCA inputs 3 selectable inputs in total

and Balanced XLR and RCA outputs.

The balanced and unbalanced outputs are fully buffered, this means the XLR and RCA outputs can be driven concurrently or all at the same time.

The volume control will be a Gold Point 24 position stepped attenuator; manual control only on this unit.

RCA Monitoring buffered loop outputs and HT Bypass capable on the 3rd selectable input.

12v trigger output to remotely control power on/off on the Holton power amplifiers.

All coupling input and output capacitors will be audio grade Metalised polypropylene or MKP

The chassis for the preamp will be fully CNC machined anodised 10mm front and back panels;

To match the current range of Holton power amplifiers, such as the Holton Five-Zero-Zero power amplifier

Expected dimensions will be 400mm Wide x 80mm High x 350mm Deep and approximate net weight 6kg

Some progress photos of the new pre-amp will be posted soon.

Hi Everyone

I have almost completed the PCB layout for the New 101 Holton preamp main board.

Here is a rough 3D model of its basic layout.

The preamp will have independent dual power precision power supplies for each channel; why have one power supply when you can have two of them. :)

The voltage regulated power supplies are my own discrete low noise design that I have been using in my higher end power amplifiers.

These have been adapted to operate at +-15volt rails for each channel.

In addition to that there will be a separate isolated +5volt supply for the logic circuity.

There will be an additional front panel PCB designed for the input selection and power management circuitry, not should here.

The current main board measures 355mm wide x 300mm deep.

It will be a high grade FR4 2mm thick Gold plated printed circuit board, nothing but the best for this preamp. :)

Stay turned there is much more to come!

Hi Everyone

Thought I would give you an update on the Balanced pre-amp.

Currently running a little behind in the development due to some good design changes along the way.

The new balanced pre-amp is now going to have two ARM core processors on-board. one will control the front panel switching, IR control etc and the second processor for input relay controls,  power controller,  USB and anything else I can think of it to do.

The processors will talk to each other via their onboard high speed CAN Bus.

The pre-amp will also be operational in full Single Ended Class A from input to output, for the best possible sound quality.:)

Update on the Holton Balanced Class A Pre-Amplifier! :)

The printed circuit board layouts for the main board and front panel control have now been completed.

The Gerber files have been sent off to the PCB manufacture for processing.

I will have the new pre-amp boards back in about 10 days time for final assembly, so not long now.

Once I get the first board assembled I will post some photos of the Pre-amp board then.

Stay Tuned! :)

Holton 101 Pre-Amplifier Update!

The Holton One-Zero-One Pre-Amplifier boards have finally arrived this afternoon, Here is a few quick photos of a mock-up of the preamp.

Its going to be a fun weekend, myself and my friend Mike Cruse from Definium Technologies will be assembling and programming a couple of these boards over the next couple of days.

More photos and updates to come very soon.

I will be trying out a couple of different opamp types  to see which ones perform the best both subjectively and objectively.

Be sure to stay tuned and please add some comments. ?

Holton One-Zero-One Preamp Update!

Here is a snapshot of the Holton 101 Preamp during some sound trials over the weekend.

Suffice to say it has not dissapointed at all.

Objectively and subjectively it is stunning!

Siganl to noise ratio was measured down to the noise floor of my measuring equipment;  -120dB SNR. from what I am seeing on my equipment the actual noise floor is down around -125db, so it is very quiet indeed.

Frequency response is absolutely crazy at 1.3mhz at -3dB point and very clean signal.

THD+N is again down to the limits of my measuring equipment at 0.001% THD+N 10khz

So how does it sound?

The Holton 101 preamp is currently connected in front of a EXOGAL Comet DAC and the 101 preamp is directly driving Holton Five-Zero-Zero power amplifier.

The 101 preamp takes nothing away from the sound stage, in fact in the words of a visiting customer who listened to the combo this morning. "it adds an extra 3D focus and air to instuments in space" compared to the EXOGAL Comet DAC driving the Holton Five-Zero-Zero power amplifier directly.

More to come soon!

My goodness Anthony, that is just bloody stunning!!!! Looks like I better start listing a kidney.. ?

BTW, are you still planning slightly lower spec models as well?

Cheers, Steve ?

Hi Steve

Thanks mate, it has taken quite a few months to get to this stage and I am very please to say my efforts have been rewarded with excellent performace both subjectively and objectively.

Put simply it sound's bloody awesome! ?

I am planning at least one other even higher end pre-amplifier this year, but that is another story; the technology that has been developed from the 101 preamp is going to be placed into the Holton Integrated amplifier which will be the very next project. The Holton Integrated amplifier will not have all the large Sonicaps in it or the dual mono block topology like the 101 preamp, but for the most part have some nice bits in it.

Hi Anthony
I have a five zero zero coming soon (really excited) and am interested in a pre one zero one when you get them up and running so would like to follow this conversation. Now the dumb question - how do I follow?

Hi Everyone

It has been a while since I did an update for the new Holton One-Zero-One preamp.

The programming for the preamp will be completed in the next few days and I am expecting some machined and anodised CNC front and back panels early next week, so I will be able to fully complete the first two protoype Holton One-Zero-One preamps.

The machining and anodising has been the main holdup;  getting the colour right for silver and black panels just right and as the machining for the panels is quite complex and the machine time for jig construction and setup has been time consuming and expensive.

all of which now seems to be coming to a close, I will be doing a further update next week with a short video showing the actual preamp prototype fully operational and in its own case.

So please stay tuned, it will be worth the wait! ?

Produce natural mid-range & live like vocals which are important for most sorts of music and is especially for home cinema. Due to advanced original Manley schematics (another Manley's genius creation is VTL), 300B sound - which is typically a bit muddy - is not muddy at all. How many iconic reference preamplifier makers claim truly original schematics?..

This model has very rare transformer-coupled output. They are hard to design and even harder to build,
but produce amazing natural sound which most reference preamplifiers just don't. It has special headphone

Preamplifier is called "soul of sound". What we hear is more preamp, and less - power amp. This

Melody L280 tube preamplifier was flagship model in 2008.
      End Game preamplifier.
Melody was probably one of the most underpriced brands in Hi-Fi Audio history.
You will not find this model for sale anywhere because it is ABSOLUTE KEEPER.
Melody is an extraordinary value for money. I had 3K AUD Melody tube amplifier which made
dust of my Ayon Crossfire, costing 12K AUD.  Current flagships cost many times more – you just can't
afford them anymore. Specifically, preamplifiers: 64K AUD and 25K AUD.

I have compared Melody L280 with a legend Audible Illusions 3A (both with  upgraded NOS tubes), costing
imported 10K AUD, at my home, and L280 was a winner. Moreover, compared to Audible Illusions, L280 is built like
a tank, it is FULLY hand-wired and it has better parts – top USA brands, eg huge size made in USA by
Jensen oil caps. I have not seen bigger caps anywhere. Due to that, Melody L280 has an exceptional
lifespan - it may serve yours Iifetime. Melody L280 has absolutely unique, stunning  looks, reminding UFO flying saucer. Melody brand has many outstanding reviews on Internet. I have seen in French L280 was rated as “the best  preamplifier we ever heard at any price”.

Recently I have upgraded all tubes:
6SNGT Baldwin Pianos Organs, by Sylvania, NOS Made in USA, paid $350 (4 tubes)
      Full Music 101D (1)
5C4M=5AR4 NOS Made in USSR (1)

      Specifications:

      Vacuum tube: 101D × 1, 6SN7 × 4, 5AR4 × 1
      Output: 2V (maximum output 28V)
      Frequency response: 3Hz-100kHz ± 1dB
Input impedance: 250k ohms, input sensitivity: 50-300mV
      S / N ratio: greater than 90dB, total harmonic distortion: 0.02%, total gain: 20dB
      Dimensions (W × H × D, mm): 430 × 185 × 380
