G'day all, I was just re-reading the Elliott Sound Products P06 'public article' tonight with a few slight recent article additions and it makes very interesting reading. http://sound.whsites.net/project06.htm The first really good phono stage I built years ago was the P06 and it remains one of my best phono stages and long term favourites.

I have built and bought a lot of phono preamps over the years and most of them are really top notch, but in all honesty I'm not really sure that any of them are much better than the P06.  I've done a few 'little' mods to my P06's but they are in large part pretty much the design as published.  It really is a fine phono stage, by any measure!  Regards, Felix.

I find one of his comments particularly interesting

There's no reason I can think of that should make it sound any different from more conventional circuits

G'day mate, that's typically Rod Elliott!  Regards, Felix.

Quite down to earth, and while I have to agree with him, if indeed it does sound better, I might think it is due to having at least one of the filters as a passive network, not in the negative feedback of a gain stage.  A further improvement might be to do the same for the other.  I got this idea that passive eq networks are a good thing from some opinions I read quite some time ago. He talks about this in the introduction, but then he chooses to do one passive the other 'active' (in the feedback loop).   Can't imagine why a combination (one each way) would be any better than both done the same way.

I note changing the gain is easy by virtue of changing one resistor value (harking back to another post of yours recently)

G'day mate, yes the design with the RIAA EQ treated separately, is quite elegant and probably contributes to its 'sound', apart from general RIAA aspects.  It certainly is a very clean/open and uncompressed sounding phono stage, with an amazingly wide soundstage compared to others that I've heard.  Regards, Felix.

Not only separately, but one of them is passive.  I am suggesting that both done passively may be even better.  Actually by coincidence, I read a similar comment  on the Schiit web site.

G'day mate, I see your point but I don't think that there is any penalty with the bass equalisation being done this way in the P06.  Regards, Felix.

G'day mate, you should try building it sometime.  You might be pleasantly surprised!  Regards, Felix.

I had a look at the P06 preamp and the associated P05 power supply on Rod's site.

What would you estimate the cost of (high quality) components to populate these boards?

Spoiler

G'day mate, I bought most of my components from Jaycar....not very expensive, metal film resistors and MKT capacitors.  Regards, Felix.

I know this is a very old thread, I've just got this kit and trying to work out what power supply to feed it with. Do you have any suggestions (I'm in Melb)?

G'day mate, a low noise power supply is extremely important! I recommend the Elliott Sound Products P05 Mini at the very least, or a P05 revision B (slightly better).  Regards, Felix.

Thanks. I have the P05 power supply, but don’t know what to feed that with, there is no spec on current drain for the P06 that I can find.

I have a 240-24v AC plug pack good for 0.5A, and potentially a 240- 15/0/15 centre tap transformer rated at 150mA.

G'day mate, use a 16VAC linear plugpack.  Jaycar have them and that's what I use.  Regards, Felix.

G'day mate, that will be fine, but the earth wire will be unused.  Regards, Felix.

G'day mate, no.  If you have access to the secure section, all wiring details are there.  Connect the 16 VAC wires to either AC1 or AC2 and ground.  Regards, Felix.

I can supply you with a much better 16VAC 2500mah Linear supply, RCM compliant, use them for Oracle Origine TT's. Shoot me a msg if you havent bought something yet.
