buddhamus
Hello Peeps & Peepettes, The wife and I will be building in July this year and I will finally have a dedicated space to have my HT room in. Mind you guys, I dont have the time or skills to do much of the work my self but will tackle some small stuff along the way but most of the woodwork/plastering work will be done by some tradies I know. Here are the house plans and the theatre room will be called "Dark Room" as I do not want windows *even though the retarded architect decided to put windows on the plan regardless of how many times I told him*...final plans will have no windows The plasterer who is doing our house has done a few studios and has installed Hat/Channels/whisper clips using Green Glue with double plasterboard so he knew what he was talking about regarding sound isolation. Theater room size is 4.5w x 6.6ml x 2.7m Soundproofing - Whisper clips all around the room 1 layer of 16mm Fyrchek or Firestop and 1 layer of pine for a mounting substrate with green glue/quiet glue in between. Main door - Not sure, I will need some help and ideas as Im going with single door solid core door with seals as it's more cost effective than double, but I'm not sure how I should tackle this or do 2 solid core door to provide a air gap in between. HVAC - Been speaking with ArthurK and I do want this to be done right but I seriously cannot afford an obscene amount of money to do it like how some guys do it. So he provided me with some alternatives. 1 x Air Heat Transfer kit to dump the stale air outside or into another area of the house. http://www.universal...-transfer-kits/ 1 Air con vent coming into the rooms - I'm guessing the norm is having 4 bends before the duct enter's the HT room 1 Hydronic heating panel - We have decided to go this way.......just looking for quotes atm though. Rack - In the rack section I will be placing a AV Track Rack system, So I can pull it out and turn it around to get access to the back of the components. I have spoken to them and they said the cavity I have for the Rack is more than big enough to fit one in lol. Screen - Definetly going AT this time around, no questions asked...............and Scope too. Trying to get in touch with Prior as I remember him wanting to get rid of his OZTS 135 AT screen.......but haven't heard anything as of yet --------------------------------------------------------------------- That's it for now....................I will be also building a riser and screen wall of course. I would absolutely love to do acoustics and if budget permits Ill be doing the whole room. Building should start around July and we should have everything finalised by the next few weeks. Please give me your idea's guys as I need as much information for this HT room of mine or even give me a helping hand one weekend...........the more the merrier lol..... Hardware will be the same that as in my signature below. SandS
What end is the screen going, never liked the door on the end wall. Where are you placing rear speakers
Aj72
Look forward to seeing your progress Budd. When I told my wife I was going to soundproof a room for Home Theatre her face lit up like a Christmas tree. Until I told her what it's going to cost.... buddhamus
What end is the screen going, never liked the door on the end wall. Where are you placing rear speakers Bottom end....so the screen will be opposite end to the door. Speaker's....Ill be speaking to someone regarding placement of speakers and subs. Have spoken to Stuart from Acoustic vision so he is in the process of organising this for me.

Yeah my wife was the same...but she knows how much I love my theater. So she let me have it. These days I hardly crank my system up as my 15 month old son is always napping and my house is open plan....so the sound literally travels all over the house. SandS
Will council pass room with no window?
buddhamus
If it's a habitable room, no they won't...since a theater is a habitable room. So non habitable are Dark room/storage room/wine cellar etc.............council passed with my brother in laws house HT room and a few friends did the same thing lol. No problems with the council what so ever......they do say put a lit up exit sign at the door........my brother in law ran the wire just incase they came but no one even showed up. Council just makes things harder for ppl............seriously.

HT Rooms are now the norm for most house and they will do dispensation for HT rooms to have no windows as long as ventilation is taken care of. They want something like 25-30 air changes an hour. It has been a long time since we did ours and it was all good to go so there is nothing you need to dodge to get it done and above board, especially if you put the universal fans air system in. Now with respect to your rear door, make it swing outwards not into the room. I assume you are going to put a riser in? If so you will need steps up and if the door swings in there will be a landing strip of 800x800 that you will lose plus a step. Rear surrounds will work approximately 1200-1500 in from the edges of the room and you will be in the perfect mounting location so door wont impact that. With the side surrounds you will most likely mount them at 110 degrees to the front row. Your room is the same size as mine (nearly 6900 x 4500 - now 6000 x 4200 with false wall and wall treatments built out) I can give you the ACad drawings WRT speaker placement and it worked brilliantly. Since I installed 2 rows of side surrounds I didnt mount at 110 degrees but it sounded great there and Gordon from Acoustic Vision was happy with my initial placement. K1LL3M
Will council pass room with no window? Not on its own. But you can use borrowed light and vent from an adjoining room providing it has openings that can satisfy 10% light and 5% vent of the floor area of both rooms to still meet the deemed to satisfy requirements. The other option is an alternate solution; and typically where the HVAC systems come in
K1LL3M
Council just makes things harder for ppl............seriously. Actually no, sorry bud, thats the Building Code of Australia. Councils merely enforce it Edit - Forgot a smiley face. Lol Edited March 8, 2014 by K1LL3M

GETREAL
Awesome news Kevin! Look forward to your progress along the way. Great layout you have there, here's a few things I would look at if it were me: - Maybe switch the HT room and Laundry over, so that the Laundry sits between the HT room and Master Bed, this will help with isolating the Master Bedroom from HT room. - The door entry of the HT will limit the amount of chairs in the rear row but no big deal. My room is exactly the same and has a landing upon entry, taking away one seat from the rear row. Speaker placement for rear is not an issue. You are more than welcome to come over and check out my room, its very similar in size to yours but is not complete, but will give you a good idea on layout and size. GETREAL
Also I would look at reducing the slab height by 300mm in HT room, giving you 3m ceilings and walking straight onto rear riser....
709er
Also I would look at reducing the slab height by 300mm in HT room, giving you 3m ceilings and walking straight onto rear riser.... That is an absolutely awesome idea! I imagine it may pose an engineering question or two (and a bit of doh), but the result would be spectacular. Love it Like sunken lounges from the early 80's. Congratulations on being at this stage Kevin. You must be riddled with excitement and anticipation. Your house-plan looks enormous too. Lovely spacious areas and a nice sense of privacy for the bedroom areas. Edited March 9, 2014 by 709er

I will definetely have the door opening outwards rather than the inwards, thats what my bro in law did too....Ill have to note that down. Actually no, sorry bud, thats the Building Code of Australia. Councils merely enforce it Edit - Forgot a smiley face. Lol Fair enough, well fk them too lol. That will be a great room Kevin - look forward to updates. Thanks Quark, kinda nervous though........lot's of stuff to think about...but the HT room is the thing that's stressing me out the most lol. Awesome news Kevin! I really did not want the HT room so close to the master bedroom, but there was no other way...since my Mrs did not want to switch the laundry's position....I guess I had to sacrifice the location for having one of the biggest rooms in the house for my needs LOL!. We have a big block 800m2 but the land we have is quite odd shaped since it's at the end of a court :S. Ill have to take you up on that offer of visiting your HT mate, will contact you in the next few weeks to organise a time. Thanks buddy! Also I would look at reducing the slab height by 300mm in HT room, giving you 3m ceilings and walking straight onto rear riser.... I'll have to ask the builder, I have heard of this.........ill try and get quotes for how much it will cost to drop the slab 300mm or just go with 3m ceilings............If it's too much ill just go with 2.7. Ill definetley take you up on that offer of visiting your HT mate. I will contact you in the next few weeks to organise a time. Thanks mate! That is an absolutely awesome idea! Thanks Ruth, We have been working on the plans for a year now, due to us having a odd shaped land but the way the house sits on the land now is very practical and we still have a great size backyard. Great idea but it will add a fair amount to the price as the slab will need extra reinforcement, shoring up, excavation etc and builders just love these little minor changes . We were at a friends house on Saturday night and they have a cosmetically brilliant HT room. the aura a 3metre room provides is priceless. I wish mine was 2700 or taller now........... ArthurK
Not sure yet. Got anyone you can recommend? I used a private surveyor - GE Building Surveyors (Michael / Steve / Seamus - 9528 6200) they were pretty good but I knew the guys before we built - they used to be part of the internal team at Glen Eira Council prior to contracting the service out and they set up their own shop. The main reason why I asked is we/my company does the IT management for Brimbank City Council we have been running their IT systems since Feb. 1999. Talk to your architect/drafty and see who they work with and shop around - just remember you cannot sack your building surveyor easily if you arent happy with them
