I would love to attend but I really do not understand that consumers must pay to go to these things. These distributors want to show us their items for sale and we have to pay for the privelige? If they want consumers to see their gear they should bear the cost. It's like having to pay up front before seeing the menu at a restaurant.

I hear the rooms are going to be terrible, even compared to the rooms in Melb.

Pity.

Exhibitors are already paying ~$6k for a room

Your entry isn't paying them, it's paying the event organiser, as are the exhibitors

It seems a lot of the Oz brands that were at the Melbourne show won't be at the Sydney show

But I'm going anyway. Catch up with some mates at the same time.

Well I won't be attending, There just going to have to manage on there own. Frankly I can't see the point of a 1000 kilometre

round trip, and then being asked to pay to go through the doors. One would think this is just a business arrangement to extract

as much as possible from the exhibitors and Jo Public. Or is it just another social gathering for the chosen few.

Well I still dont see the point like a car show - why would I pay $25+ to go look at cars I can see for free in a dealership?

Cause you can't see them all under 1 roof. Just like no retailer of AV gear will have all competing brands available to compare.

As an enthusiast it's also pretty enjoyable to even see some of this gear. Let alone experience albeit in a limited fashion. Have a bit of play With stuff. Good also to meet up and chat with some of the makers who often attend plus people in industry.

Not something for everyone sure, but it along with melb show now gone the best av/hifi show Australia has seen in decades. And along similar lines of the annual shows in uk and vegas hotels. The melb one was hugely popular. The ticket I bought which I thought reasonably priced. Especially with discount on the web pre booking I found gave unlimited access over the entire week end. Something don't hear too many shows doing. Good value and presume the Sydney shoe be run the same :)

Some of the exhibitors.

here's a novel idea for them......

complain to the organisers...........

I enjoyed going to the Melbourne one too. Ticket price wasn't a big issue, thought it was quite reasonable actually. Was good to see/hear some amazing equipment, however the 'hotel room' set up was not ideal at all.

Indeed. SQ is terrible. Still great fun though. Hopefully there won't be any idiots from WA that unhook any speaker cables!

I'd love to go to CES though ;) Sounds like a hoot

Well, trundled along today and had a good look around. As expected rooms were challenging and it was interesting to see the treatments or lack there of use.

The highights for me.

  • value for money the Aussies really well and truly hold there own VAF, Ricther and Equinox had good showings and really enjoyed the Osborn room
  • the anamorhic lens in level 1 audio active room with paradigm subs
  • back for buck for a desk top or second system the NHT speakers would be pretty hard to beat
  • enjoyed playing with the Arcam streaming units
  • Bryston room
  • Focal room
  • Opportunity to listens to panel speakkers (maggies etc) and some good tube gear

Interesting to listen to but wasn't blown away:

  • TAD $55k
  • Kyron look fantasic , $188k
  • JBL and B&W rooms

Anyway heading back tommorrow for a secound round.

Dropped in to have a look on Saturday, quite a good time, there were a few brands I would of liked to see represented but not the end of the world.

The $$$ on show was pretty amazing. Outside the Aussie brands, Yamaha and the Amber Technology brands, most of the equipment would only be available to the super rich.

I thought Bryston were a bit cheeky using $100K+ Dynaudio speakers to demonstrate their amp - yes it will sound great with those speakers, providing they're set up correctly. Let's hear the difference on < $10K per pair speakers. They have the best warranty though - 20 years.

Unfortunately, many of the rooms were terrible for demoing gear. Yamaha's room on level 1 had a 70-80dB noise floor with very challenging acoustics and their room was also a thoroughfare for a couple of other displays. JBL had their horn-loaded floorstanders with 15" bass drivers sitting about 6 feet from listeners.

Audio Active had the best room acoustics wise - it was like a large wedding venue and away from everything - quiet. The $200K+ of gear didn't have to deal with too many acoustical issues. I thought the surround channels were up a bit high but it was pretty good none-the-less. Considering the gear and the room they had, I was expecting more. They had an excellent projector though - $70,000 including the lens - and the picture was awesome.

Personally, I liked the Kyron room the best. I thought Yamaha's 2-channel room was very good considering the price of the equipment they were using (about 1-10% of the price of what was being demoed in other rooms). Other than Kyron, most of the 2-channel rooms had uneven/wooly bass, which is what happens when you use the mains to reproduce the bass notes in those small rooms. Kyron's bi-polar bass drivers and the speaker positioning may be why the bass was a bit smoother.

The dyn's in the Bryston room were Confidence C4s, a $24k speaker, considering the 28BSST are a 1kw mono block at $14k, a reasonable setup and I thought quite telling of the companies thoughts.

From todays listen I revisited a number or the rooms and ended up likeing the sonus faber and focal jm rooms.
