Heading back on the train now. Took advantage of the weekend pass they have for the show which lets you wander in wander out !

Plenty to check out. Met up with heaps of familiar faces in both industry people and forum members. It's like everyone was there ! :D

Did take a few pics with the point and shoot camera. No booth babes as such except at the sennheisser booth. Hehe

Hope it's not another 20 years before something like this returns !

As a southern hemisphere show also lucky to see a few things just release :)

Yep got pics but, sorry, not of the booth babes! Trust me, the SGR exhibit was, ah, interesting. ;)

Pics and more later

You have me intrigued. What was so interesting ?

Have others but these are of the kit that took by eye / ear.

Sorry folks, they were recorded in RAW format and I'm too lazy to do the manual White Balance on them so some have a bit of a caste on them. Complain to the management but I don't think they give a stuff either! :P

Wow... Certainly some pretty good gears there!!!

A few comments on what caught my eye and ear, in no particular order.

But first a proviso: obviously the listening environment left a lot to be desired and I did not have "my" music with me.

Kuzma Stabi XL2 turntable - Wasn't overly impressed with the final sound, which is not to say it was in any way shabby. But what was there couldn't have been that good without a fantastic source. Would REALLY like to have a listen to this TT in a more controlled environment.

KEF Blade speakers - These would probably be the highlight of the show. Would have a set of these in a blink of an eye - but see above proviso,

SGR Illuminator speakers - Had a really good listen to these from the "sweet spot". They had an exceptional sound stage: wide, high and deep. The music was electronic and obviously selected to highlight the prowess of these speakers. But, and my bank manager will be happy with this, they are not to my taste. Again, see above proviso.

Thanks for the reports mate. Everyone has different tastes, that is what makes this hobby pretty damn interesting :)

Can't wait to hear all these set ups myself :)

These were my highlight as well.

If I was serious about my 2 channel music, then these would def be high on my list.

Price was no where near as I high as I though as well - assumed it would be in the 6 figure region.

Already regretting I didn't just drop everything and fly over for a short break...  Sounds like a well organised event....

Any pics, and any booth babes?...

I actually lined up at opening time on Friday and before I knew it I had run out of time and they were closing the rooms at 6PM. Waiting to catch the lift down from the 3rd floor I noticed an attractive young woman in a tight Sennheiser top. She was the first booth babe I saw and I had not noticed their absence until then because of the sensational products on display! I really enjoyed seeing the high quality Australian products on display. Other highlights were the KYRON room and the room with the Magnapans but really too many to mention. On the Video side the RUNCO 3D projector was very impressive but I took off before hearing the price!

I was there all day today. I was metaally prepared to be let down agin by an Oz hifi show but it was good (given the obvious limits of hotel rooms etc). Id say well worth the value of a last minute plane flight from interstate. Not every day that you get to meet Christophe Cabasse and Dan D'Agostino.

My best sound was the D'Agostino room with either the blades or the sasha's (think I will just buy a pair of both). I also thought the TAG room was great as was WAR audio. The Kryon room and the cabasse also excellent but both made the blades seem a bargain

My Dissapointments:

- the Classe/B&W 802 room - was not bad but just expected more

- Audio research/Martin Logan - again OK but when you have heard what the ML's can do when properly positioned it was diissapointing (though totally understandable)

- the Focal Scala Utopia /krell setup. Sounded very average - even poor I thought. The room next door with the electra 1028's / musical fidelity gave a way better result.

- MIT cables. Sorry but if I pay $4000 for a cable I would expect the network boxes to be made of billet unobtainium not plastic. Yes its all about the sound but.... just dissappointed.

- The SGR room. I dont get it - I thought it sounded dead average - like the sound was trapped in that massive box

- Never got to see the RUNCO room going. The door was locked so presumably some kind of disaster. So Im still in the "I hate 3D camp".

The good Ideas

Making a wirelsess PJ. The epson 3D room gave me instant eyestrain but I like the idea of not needing a 10M HDMI cable. Not sure what the picture was like for 2D.

The VAF subwoofer cabinet. If you are not allowed a big box sub in the room its good compromise. Heard better Subs but...

What impressed me

The Way the Linn systems all networked together. Bloody brilliant - if I wanted whole house audio this was very impressive - shame about the price

What annoyed me

The usual audiophile "music". Was it J. Gordon Holt (?) that observed that the quality of the recording is inversly proportional to the quality of the music. I dont often get to hear a Utopia/krell setup so listening to Tuvan throat singing just didnt do it for me. Interesting and all but please can we just have some music. Its like a race to the bottom to find the most ecclectic or esoteric recordings.

What I now Lust after.

Meridian Sooloo's. Its just very cool. Again shame about the absurd price but I am thinking to aquire the 200 (if only it had an android version of the app). Also proves that the squeezebox touch is brilliant and a total bargan.

Wilson Sasha's - just plain good. amazing bass extension

I was also told that the plan is for the show to alternate every year between Melbourne and Sydney. So I may have to visit the outlaws in NSW next year - on the results of this year I would say a worthwhile sacrifice

Brilliant observation, I was thinking the same myself as I entered room after room to be met by recordings that just didn't do it for me or the equipment in my view. Was as bad as the fact everyone showing off a screen almost wanted to show Tron all the time.

My Dissapointments:

Hifi shows are mostly about the equipment and the store that stock them, altogether in one convenient place. Looking at systems one usually don't really even bother to look or ask when in the shops :P...

The sound quality in show setups can be very deceptive in some cases, e.g. it may sound ordinary if not outright poor in the show... But visit them again in the store and it may well be very different.

For those that weren't not there: http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?act=att...st&id=12457

I agree re 802's. I was totally unimpressed with these speakers. I understand that problems with the environment and the "music" not being "mine" but even so, a good speaker will show some hint of its quality through those impediments. The 802's didn't.

That said, if I was in the market I'd still audition these in more favourable conditions. But how many people would have been put off by their lacklustre showing?

I agree they really didn't do them a lot of justice at all, given the setup they were in,

This is how demoed them not that long ago at Tivoli

http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?act=att...st&id=11968

and really what's needed in my opinion to enjoy them as really lovely speakers,

they would have been better off with just running the 805D which would have just thrived in the small room setup it was.

Another that suffered in environment were the cabasse, those who heard them at audio trends would remember how awesome they were, the scala and krell combo might as well have been a static one as well :D

That said best sounding setup I heard was the little known kyron, they really did best of rather poor listening environment a show makes. Another that really impressed was the Sasha - Dan agostino setup, and the Maggie's with the big amps and power cables that would give those that argue about power cords mass convulsions

Some other likable sounds for me were the Vienna acoustics of the luxmans, the audio physics, and also pmcs and focal 1028be off the mf m6 and m6500i :)

Popped into Cleff on Saturday to pick up something and mentioned the 802's at the show.

They are brand spanking new, but Like Al said, they demand a good room and setup.

They are not a speaker you can just pop down and hope for the best.

When i auditioned a pair in my room, everything was beautiful from high to lower midbass, but then it fell apart and got boomy.

With a slight hump at around 60Hz and my room gain, it would have meant a bit of work to get them spot on, which at the time i was not prepared to do.

However if you put the effort in, you will be rewarded with these speakers.

True enough I also found the 802s disappointing there. I love the look of them, and obviously the 800s and while would never buy a speaker based on looks, they would be one I would like in the living room if they sounded nice. I spoke to the guys there and they told me they were fresh out of the box and had not been run in. They also mentioned that a big room was needed, which is obviously one of the issues with a show like this. But then I wondered why they were playing them and not some of the bookshelfs they had there that probably would have worked well in the room. If I do get around to buying some new 2channel, and it is an if at the moment, and if I can sort out a decent budget, I would go down to clef and have good listen to them properly, along with a few other speakers.

I can't wait to hear them at Joz's house. I'm sure there will be some in depth reports and pic's to share once he has them all set up :)

It just go's to show how important room treatments & speaker placement is, Very hard to accomplish at A HiFi show know doubt & always over looked..

at least Ive never seen A optimized system setup at any show ive been to...

802's fall under this catergory IMO allong with pretty much all others...

Agreed. Rick did a good job of the room treatments in the Equinox Room.
