reubot Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 More interested in the original 8 channel Galaxy line up - IIRC it was Premier Sports, Showtime, Encore, Red, Discovery, Arena, TV1 and Nickelodeon... Discovery and Nick were originally Quest and Max, also I think it was actually 9 or 10 channels, however at launch only 2 channels were operational (PSN & ANBC). PSN ANBC Showtime (March) Encore (March) TV1 (April) Arena (April) Max (April) Red (April) Quest (April) And Optus Vision's 12 - Oh!, MTV, Ovation, The Movie Network, Sports Australia, ESPN, TNT, Cartoon Network, Disney... what else?? CNN?? Nah a lot of those channels didn't launch until a year or two later. Handful of households switch on to cable Didn't FX become W channel - not Fox Classics? Yep, they went from retro to women's to drama.
Sadivad Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 Wow thanks for all the info Whilst we are on the history path can anyone shed light on the following Foxtel channel events 1, When did ABN stop being broadcast on Foxtel and what was it replaced with? 2, When did the Fox Footy Channel and Fox Footy Extra channels start and finish? (I know that the Fox Footy Extra came later) but can't remember when. How many AFL seasons were they on for was it one or two (I don't think it was more)? 3, When did TNT become TCM? 4, Finally when did the Disney Channel start on Foxtel?

Fox Footy was on for 5 years, 2002-2006, it finished not long after the 2006 Grand Final and Fox Sports 3 started, not sure about Fox Footy Extra
timy Posted July 13, 2010 Author Posted July 13, 2010 Does anybody know which pay tv channel was the first to officially start broadcasting in Australia was it PSN OR ANBC or did they start simutaneously?
ChrisCh Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 not sure about Fox Footy Extra I believe it *may* have ended in 2005 - I remember it being gone for some time before Fox Footy was closed.

Good questions Sadivad, great to get the brain scratching starting 1. I'm sure it was 'replaced' with CNBC. 2. FFC started in 2002, when Fox/9/10 got the rights. FFE came one year later 2003, and lasted 1 year. 2004 FFC went to the sports package (no longer an extra to pay $80 a year for) when Digital was released to the market 3. April 2000 4. December 2001. I think this was the first 'Optus' channel to come on board.

I believe it was Sky Channel, launched 1985 Correct me if I am wrong, but they used to screen PPV boxing as well as horse racing. I remember seeing their listings in the Green Guide as a kid Edited July 13, 2010 by DansDans

BamBBBam Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 I can remember Showtime would have very soft-core adult stuff late on Saturday nights.
Giggler99 Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 (edited) I think Foxtel started with bloomberg as well? I remember how hi tech the channel looked back in the late 90's The BBC was the only news channel on Galaxy back in 1995 can't remember which month it was launched but. Also TVSN that originally launched on the Glaxay platform in December 1995. Edited July 13, 2010 by Giggler99

loony Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 (edited) But it is the response of the households that have forked out $30 for their connection and $25-$40 a month for the service that will determine whether Optus VisionOptus Vision's ``12-channel service" http://newsstore.fairfax.com.au/apps/viewD...50919_0128_1473 So $25-40 in 1995 works out to be $36-57 in todays money after factoring in inflation. So back in 1995 the cost for 12 channels was somewhere between the cost of today's basic package and the basic package+a channel pack. Or to look at it another way. For the same price as it was in 1995 you now get 35 channels compared to 12 Thats 2 new channels a year for free Edited July 13, 2010 by loony

robertr Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 (edited) Could you receive sky channel in the home and if so how could you subscribe and what equipment did you need? My understanding is that Sky Channel was exclusively available to clubs & pubs until September 1998 when Sky Racing was formed for the home market & was available on Foxtel, it was unavailable to homes prior to September 1998.
