Shah Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 Not sure what forum to ut this in so I have put it in several. Need some help. I have a Pioneer DVD recorder. I recorded some movies from Fox onto the hard drive. I then copied them onto a DVD disc (DVD-R). I "initialised" and "finalised" the dvd disc. I have an old DVD player in another room and tried to play the disc. It read the disc and then a"Disc error" message came up. I have a fairly new LG DVDR in another room and tried to pay the disc on it. It read it and gave the following message "Unknown disc. Please check disc again" I checked the manuals of both LG and they say the DVD-R is compatible. I am using Tayo Uden discs. Just to check I used a Verbatim disc with the same result. I dont think it is an unclean lens as the chance of both DVD players having an unclean lens is pretty slim. Anyone got any ideas

50mxe20 Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 Did you do quick copy or do it the slow way. Real time. Sometimes the former method has issues. Try the latter.

amb101 Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 N.....I recorded some movies from Fox onto the hard drive. I then copied them onto a DVD disc (DVD-R). Does the Pioneer DVD recorder also have a hard drive, and you copied the movie from the hard drive to the dvd-r? So the dvd-r should play ok in the Pioneer DVD recorder, is that right? That's why jmds is asking what is the file format. To play the DVD-R just like any normal dvd movie in another dvd player, you need to get a dvd authoring program. It will create 2 folders, audio_ts (which is kind of obsolete) and video_ts. The video_ts folder has the movie files in it (.vob files), plus a few other files. So you need to covert your files from the pioneer format to the standard .vob format, and author it. Think I'm on the right track, hope it helps. AB

I was under the impression that that is exactly what DVD recorders are supposed to be able to do. Some can record in other formats as well, though, and they might be incompatible with standard DVD players.

Yeh you're right, I think I figured it out anyway, he should have given more details, and I should have read more carefully. It's been recorded with one of those fox IQs with a hard drive. then he's tried to copy it in real time on to his pioneer dvd recorder.

Hopefully you didn't initialise after you copied them onto the the DVD-R, you should only need to finalise after you have copied them to DVD-R and you want to play them back on another machine, if you need to initialise at all it will need to be done before copying the recordings to DVD-R. You could also try the disc in a computer as it may be more compatible or some DVD burning software may be able to give you more info about the disc and what's going wrong.
