Chris Dowling Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 If im to setup a home theatre im wondering what type of cable you guys recommend i use for the audio speakers? i know the thicker the copper the better it will be, but say i buy one of those sony blueray hometheatres that they advertise in the Harvey Norman adds all the time what type of cable id use for that? or are the ones supplied fine to use? there are so many types its confusing.. am i right in saying it depends what wattage and ohms the speakers are to whats the best type of cable to use?

Make the maths simple in most domestic situations as the resistance is low enough under most domestic lengths.
K1LL3M Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 (edited) 10 awg cable. Different story if its a not so much a HTiB (all in one amp/BD, 1 lead to sub, speaker wires all running from sub) and more a packaged separates deal. Edited May 26, 2010 by K1LL3M

Gior Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 Maybe I should recommend the DIRECTIONAL SPEAKER CABLE which I am using now??? Has arrows on it. I point the arrows so that the electrons flow from the amp to the speaker. If people don't believe me, they are welcome to double check the wiring. I can guarantee that all my directional speaker cable is pointed so that the arrows are pointing to the speaker. I've even wired up the bits inside the speaker that way. The voices have been telling me to run the cable in the direction it has been extruded as the crystals are aligned more favourably that way.

Now Gior, you know that the directional speaker wire does nothing, Unless of course you use it in conjunction with directional power cables and directional RCAs. You have to do it all directional, otherwise the electrons get confused.

I don't think they were made directionally, but then again, as the ends are different, ANY GOOD POWER manufacturer I assume would hook the ends up in the right direction. Besides, I'm BEYOND RCA's, you do know that I use XLR's (and HDMI!!!) apart from the Gold Raincoat RCA's that came with my Jungson CD player especially for it's Tube output stage.
Grrrrr Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 Being daft and all as we are, here's a silly suggestion: Plug the Impedance of your speakers (in Ohms) and the required length of the speaker wire (in metres) into this formula and you'll get a number that approximates the thickness of copper cable you need (in AWG.) 20 - (2*(log2(8*metres/Ohms))) = AWG

Maybe I just can't do maths???
dham Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 Hmm, my answer keeps coming as 10 for some reason ...Maybe I just can't do maths??? Mmmmm ???? me too Say 10 meters and 8 ohm impedance AWG = 20 - (2*(log2(8*metres/Ohms))) AWG = 20 - (2*(log2(8*10/8))) AWG = 20 - (2*(log2(10)) AWG = 20 - (2*1) AWG = 18 Is this correct

dham Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 Not quiteLog2(10)=3.32 therefore AWG=13 Damn ... Scientific calculator user error 2^x=10
